Laser dry-fire training options?

Hello All,

My current life situation is that I have little to no time to hit the range but want to get back into IPSC semi-seriously. I slipped from an A class shooter several years ago to a solid B shooter, and have now dumped to near the bottom of D class which is pretty humbling - what's up with all these mini-targets...Arghhh! :)

I've started dry firing at home a few nights a week for around a half hour with some targets up, to try to get some speed and muscle memory back. I did a search on CGN on the use of laser devices for training but came up almost empty. Is anyone doing this? If so what tools are you using as it seems that there's a lot of stuff our there.

  • From what I can tell Laser Ammo might have the best option for a laser device only because you can replace the rear of it when it wears out. Seems to be the only one you can do this with.
  • There's a bunch of CO2 kits out there for real guns but that seems a bit hokey because based on the videos I've seen, the guns seems to recoil backwards (barrel dips instead of rising, if anything). Also no CO2 options for a Shadow so that's little use to me really.
  • Laser Ammo has a smokeless range software that looks pretty neat but I'm pretty sure I don't shell out that kind of money.

Any experiences shared would be appreciated.

Laser ammo is a good way to do it, I bought a 9mm round for about $40.

There are a few apps that you can download, which have different levels of effectiveness.

I have iTarget Pro (Haven't tried it yet)
as well as LASR (Laser activated shot reporter) this didn't work reliably for me.

I also Built my own target system which works fairly well. (LINK)

Dry fire makes a huge difference, especially if you use your real gun, and your equipment. (I don't like the SIRT pistol... since it is Glock and I shoot SIG)

Another option is the Mantis X pistol attachment, but it won't work in holsters. (It basically uses accelerometers and vibration sensors to graphically depict bad habits on a phone screen) A very useful tool, but had a fed draw backs... I do like that it can help during live fire as well.

Thanks Daver. I just ordered the 9mm Laser Ammo as a starter. I'm impressed with your target system...but I not nearly that handy. I'll look into the iTarget program.

Get extra batteries and an extra activator cap. Laser ammo also let me know when my sights started to drift after a full IPSC season. Keeps practice from getting boring. Ben Stoeger just re amped his dry fire work book. Good stuff and extreme par times for the show pro's.
