Looking for a good laser to range out to 500 meters.

In my area we don't get much past 500

What units should I look at

Cheers

What are you ranging at 500? Will it be fur or hills/trees? There kind of a difference between the two.

Your best value is most likely going to be a Bushnell.

I have an elite 1 mile and I'm really happy with it.

I was thinking of trading in my gforce 1300 for the 1 mile. What kind of ranges are you getting out of that for hills/trees kind of thing, and ranging fur.

general rule of thumb is to get a unit rated for twice the distance you want to measure.

This is because the published ranges are for "perfect" targets at the maximum rated distance.
(Say a white-painted 4'x4' piece of metal).

A rock, tree or a mound of dirt is going to reflect much less energy at the same distance.

Have a look at the NEWCON OPTIK - LRM 1500M for your application.

They have other models rated for much longer distances too :)

I have a vortex, It works pretty good. I was considering the Leica too. I got a good deal on the vortex, otherwise I would have gotten the Leica.

Leica. I've got the CFR-1000 and it will work at and beyond the 1000 yard/meter range with good reflection.

Used it to range a horse once (a bet thing) and it was 1080m.

Expensive, but will not disappoint.

One knock against the Leica is that it doesn't have a threaded adapter to mount a tripod. Other than that, I think it's better than the vortex. That being said, being able to mount my vortex to a tripod is a really nice feature.

I can normally get 1200 yards on trees most times and 1400 yards on trees every once and awhile (1 in 10 shots maybe). The farthest I've ranged steel so far was 1108 yards and it ranges that every time i have tried (i havent tried any farther). I ranged a rock face that was roughly 4' x 8' at 1728 yards and got a reading about 1 in 10 shots. The farthest ive ranged is 1758 on a street sign and i got a reading every shot. All these were off a steady tripod.

Over all I'm really happy with it. At $500us its a great deal.

That sounds promising...

Wow thanks KS

Like with my bushy gforce 1300, the furthest I ever ranged anything was like around 1000yds and sometimes in winter on a bright sunny day I couldnt get anything over 700. Now with fur I think the furthest for me was a cow at something like 586yds if I remember correctly.

So I think if your looking for something around the 500 range I would be looking at a 1000 plus model.

I have the True Pulse laser RF forget the model number but I can range a tree 1500m pretty consistent. Furthest I have ranged steel was 1000m all this was hand held. The unit cost me $550 cnd with tax.

I have and would recommend the leica 1600b and like it a lot, I can measure a 12 in square WHITE plate at 1000 meters and am always checking it at known distances where I shoot. I never really thought about it but being its small I would agree with r14930 it would be nice if it had a thread adapter even though most of my range finding is done when I'm prone and can steady it better.

I have the Bushnell Arc 1 mile range finding binos and have ranged hills in good light out to 1900 yards. It will range cattle out to 1300-ish if it's on a steady rest. I am very happy with them and now I carry one piece of equipment where I used to carry two.
