Does anyone know anything about laser rust removers? I came across this cheap-bummed laser rust remover on my facebook feed and I am wonder if anyone has tried one? Do they take off bluing as well? I have a couple of fully engraved handguns that I want to refinish and if something like this could limit the amount of sand-paper / abrasive contact necessary.....

This is the link for the product....

Are you wanting to remove rust or bluing?

Bit of both I would think...I bought a Browning model 1922 at the auction a couple of weeks ago; fully engraved but looks like it's been skidded along the concrete, has some rust pitting and I would assume that it has some rust on it as well.

I wonder is rust remover would work? I have some Evapo-rust I have had for years for old tools, but never tried it, will not hurt paint. that will be a plated gun I think.
Those came in a set at one time Hi Power, 1922, and baby, or vest pocket.

The process might work but you are still removing metal so it might not help with pitting. The other thing is it is a high power Laser class 3b and 4 lasers just can't be sold without licences and government approval.

My 1922 is not from one of those plated sets (I think that Epp's has one of those sets if you're lucky enough to have a 12.6) and I don't would expect that it would help with pitting (obviously it's not going to add metal and fill in pits) but it would be nice if if took off the bluing and whatever rust may be present just to cut down on the amount of abrasion work necessary and thus cut down on further erosion of the roll-marks and engraving.

As for the price, I'm inclined to agree that $280 seems impossible however (and I even saw a video noting this point on that web-page), a lot of us can remember when a digital watch was hundreds of dollars (around 1980, I think) and then, just a few years later there were buckets of them at every cash register for $1.99....HUD holographic sights; a few years ago $2000, now made in china and $59.99.... Hard to know what to think; if it worked, and even if it only worked for one gun, it could be worth the $280....?

Not very hard to know what to think. If you have any sense about you then you won't waste your time or money pursuing this further. It's very easy to remove old rust and bluing, dunk the thing in white vinegar and use a toothbrush to clean the metal. Do you know how many hundreds of toothbrushes and gallons of vinegar you can buy for $280? More than enough to clean hundreds of guns.

Sorry for not replying back sooner. If you degrease the gun and submerge it in vinegar gor 20 min you will remove all the bluing. Unfortunately it will not remove your rust.
