Watching this movie and once again fell in love with the Winchester that he was showing off at the trade show. He calls it a winchester trapper and appears to be a carbine of some sort. Anyone have more info and where one might find one of these for sale and how much it might set me back? I like the enlarged lever compared to the standard Winchester levers.

They were made for a while, IIRC. I seem to remember they were .30-30, .45 Colt, .44 and .357 mags and had 16" barrels. There may have been more calibers and trim levels of them. Don't think there's anything special to them, I'd expect to pay no more than a regular '94.

Drache, as I recall, the Winchester was a reproduction of a Model 1873. I cannot recall if it was the carbine version or the rifle version. Various shooting supplies stores here in Canada carry them. Some makers and distributers are http: :) //www.cimarron-firearms.com/RepeatingRifles/1873.htm as well as http: :) //www.uberti.com/firearms/1873_rifle_and_carbine.php

From the photo it is definitely a Model 1873 repro carbine with a short barrel (hence, 'Trapper'). The Cimarron link I proved above shows that they make a nice 73 trapper. However, it comes with the standard lever, not the large loop. I've never seen a 73 with a large loop. It may have been a one-off deal just for the movie. You would have to talk to one of the sponsoring gun companies at the top of this page to see if any of them can order in a Cimarron 73 trapper for you.

Puma does make a large loop trapper, but it appears to be in the later Model 92 configuration, not the more classic model 1873 configuration as used in The Last Samurai. I guess it depends whether a fellow wants the same type of carbine trapper used in the move, but without the large loop, or a completely different carbine trapper that does have the large loop. It raises the age old problem ...... so many nice guns, so little money. :(
