Anybody is going for the late season goose in Southern Ontario (Feb 28 to March 7)?

Do you normally hunt field or open water / not frozen river or creek (if any)?

I might try and get out for a hunt. Saw hundreds of birds in the one field I hunt all week. Bet when season opens nothing will be there haha

Always.... We usually hunt feilds as open water is hard to come by in my area this time of year. This was last year on opening day, we were home by lunch. I cant wait, this is my favourite goose season.

I hope to get out, we have 3 spots we hunt, the fields would be my choice and they were packed with birds last week, but like said above, the birds will probably not be there when its time for me to be there.

You guys inspired me!

Although I only know of one person who has access to couple of the fields will see if they will be any there.

Also, I'm little confused about the Hunting regulation because I was told I am not allow to hunt areas where Sunday hunting is allow true or false?

Here's what it reads on the 2014 Waterfowl regulations:

4. Southern District Canada Geese and Cackling Geese: Feb. 28 to Mar. 7, 2015 (except for any Sunday within this period)(d)(e)

(d) In municipalities where Sunday gun hunting is not permitted by provincial regulations.
(e) Except in Wildlife Management Unit 94.

Thanks and to Killswitch: If I ever find out where you live I will sit on your driveway 3am on the opening day morning and follow you so I know where you hunt (lol). Thanks for the pics its truly is astonishing my best goose hunt was last fall, we started at 7:15am and limited out (3 guys) by around 8:30 and looks like you beat us by lot more birds.

^^^ I honestly find they make it difficult to understand on purpose. Heres how I understand it and have had it explained to me, this LATE season from Feb 28th to March 7th is only for those areas in Ontario that do NOT allow Sunday hunting. The reason for the late season week long hunt is to allow those people in areas that couldnt hunt on Sundays, the opportunity to make up those missed days (excluding the sunday of course) Also, I understand that in my area the daily limit is 5 additional birds, BUT we have never even come close to our limit so it wont matter to us anyways LOL

[e] Up to 5 additional Canada Geese or Cackling Geese, or any combination of them, may be taken daily in (i) Wildlife Management Units 36 and 45 from September 1 to September 9, 2014; (ii) Wildlife Management Units 42 to 44 and 46 to 59 from September 2 to September 19, 2014; (iii) Wildlife Management Units 60 to 81, 83, 86 to 92, and 95 from September 4 to September 14, 2014, and (iv) Wildlife Management Units 60 to 81, 83, and 86 to 92 from February 28 to March 7, 2015, in municipalities where Sunday gun hunting is not permitted.

The issue with the Sunday hunting areas is that there are a maximum number of days you can hunt waterfowl based on the North American Waterfowl management agreement with the U.S. Areas with Sunday hunting max out their days with the now extended duck season in Southern Ontario and don't have days left to allocate to a spring Canada season.

Yes the regs are a little hard to understand, it is my understanding that geese are open through out all of the southern district of ontario for this season. the hard to understand part is the bag limits. Here is the way I understand it.... if your hunting in a wmu that allows hunting on a sunday then you get the usual bag limit of 5 per hunter. if you are hunting a wmu that DOSENT allow hunting on sundays then you are allowed to harvest an extra 5 geese on top of the allotted 5 geese to make up for the lack of sunday hunting. Ive been told that The reason for this season is to stir up the resident goose populations and hopefully get them to move on before all the early spring migrators head back this way they and decide to roost up with the local goose populations causing our goose populations on public and corporate lands to spike.

Oh Ya, Spcammo you'll have to get up earlier than that to catch me...:ninja:

you can only hunt areas where there is NO Sunday gun hunting , you are allowed an additional five birds. The purpose of this season is to harvest non migrating geese "locals" These local populations don't usually migrate and are the birds you see living in golf courses and parks.

Actually swinginberrys is right, after a brief call to my C.O friend he apoligized for giving me the wrong answer last year and told me the same info as berrys has stated above.

Thanks Gentlemen for the info can't be more clear than that!

Now gotto find area where the birds are and allow to hunt.

Killswitch, if you come across more birds than hunters and don't mind use an "extra" hand let me know got everything ready except birds and this is what we got last year during first week of December.

Thanks everyone again cheers and happy hunting! :)

Right on, looks like a good hunt, if i get on the birds like i did last year you just might hear from me...

I like to kill geese to! Lmao. Give em hell boys. I miss our late season....Not like there is anything around worth chasing most years but it was always nice to have the opportunity and some years it did work out. Looks like I'll be waiting for whitey to return before I'm chasing geese again (until turkey season opens)
keep us posted if you grease em.

swinginberrys,

where is the late season held? im in Kingston and would be willing to drive up to an hour surrounding to get a chance to hunt goose.

found some! woulda had more but I forgot the shell bag at home, so we had to split a box and a half of shells between the 2 of us. Ronin made 13 successful retrieves, 3 were blind, 1 was a double and 2 were sneakup/jump shots on wounded birds out in the middle of the big field. Todays wind gusts of 37 kmh made for an interesting shoot to say the least, if the birds flew into the wind they would hover over the decoys for a few seconds fighting the wind trying to land giving us a couple easy shots. However most of the birds came in with the wind at about 5-6 feet off the ground and boy were they fast!
