I swore to myself I'd keep off social media, but with this covid cutting me off from many range friends I thought I'd share.
As much in a sense to share what I am doing, as much as maybe someone somewhere will have some positive feedback/suggestions for me.
The idea came about, when my friend purchased this 520 acre land. From the barn we have now prepped an 800yds clearing to practice.
Lot's of coyotes and deer on the land, I have a newly acquired hunting permit (even though I'm a long term RPAL owner).
The project consist of one rifle to do it all, without excelling in anything... : Shoot deer from 30-300 yds, shoot coyote up to 500-600 yds, ring the gong up to (hoping) 800yds, stay lightweight, sub 3/4 moa accuracy (even hoping for sub 1/2).
For this project, I have got into my ex rifle favourite platform, Savage 10.
For the only reason that the action is lightweight, and accustock is lightweight while having some degree of accuracy.
Down the road, I would want a hunter style custom action with savage small shank prefit barrel threads and R700 trigger/footprint, and manners ultralight CF stock.
That day ain't now as I have a budget to maintain, and is a hunter afterall, not a rifle I'll want to win matches with.
Here are the specs...
Savage 10 FCP-SR 2nd gen (top bolt release, small shank prefit, accutrigger, desert camo accustock, savage magwell,I tuned the extractor)
IBI 6.5x47 Lapua CF small shank prefit. 22'', 1:8, 5R, 0.920'' at muzzle, no muzzle threads (Jerry just dropped this one in the mail so it ain't in yet)
ARC M10 30mm Xtra low rings
NF NXS 3-15x50mm mildot scope with mil turrets, zero stop, SFP, old school but very capable
ATRS 20 moa rail, while being heavy, has very tight tolerances and won't spring on any Savage action. Tried MDT rail to cut weight, would spring like hell, didn't feel like bedding.
I have a PIG (cheap stuff I know) tripod with a HOG saddle, I am thinking this should set itself up on the field properly for nice coyote shots.
Budget with scope, action and barrel is sitting at 3500$ all included (including sold parts), which ain't bad in my opinion considering scope and barrel quality.
My guestimate would end up at 8lbs fully assembled.
Will only truly know once my IBI barrel gets here.
An estimated velocity of 2600fps (let's say I'm using my 26'' barrel ultra accurate recipe and shave off 4'' of barrel in speed) would make me lethal for the given creatures at given ranges in ft-lbs.
That is it for now, just waiting on the barrel to post pics.
Can't wait to see this barrel in, and hope there's enough SS for my barrel vice to clamp on to as I've never screwed in a CF yet.
