I have a barrel I need turned down, however I canot get it out of the receiver due to some very specialized tools needing to be built to remove it. This is not a standard receiver with srewed in barrel.

Does anyone have access to a lathe with a large bore throught the head stock? I may need an oil field style lathe with a greater than 5" bore.

Or a small lathe with a straight through chuck big enough in dia. to pass the barrel through and have the receiver hanging out the back of the lathe. :) Learned that here. I have a tendancy to think big.

You are right Mr Navyshooter.

I have the bayonet lug and flash hider for the SL8 to complete the conversion. The barrel tools are tough to locate, R. Nichols probably has a set, but I imagine they won't share.

I want to turn the barrel to G36 profile to complete the conversion. So, if I can find someone in Canada who can turn the barrel with the receiver attached that would be good. I have the diagrams to have the barrel arbor, as well as the barrel nut wrench made, but that adds to the cost significantly.

I would think you might be able to make an extended dead center to fit in the head stock and that extended far enough out to center on the chamber. Obviously support the muzzle with a center in the tail stock and drive the whole thing with a face plate. You would probably have to make a specialized dog for the face plate.
All of the above would allow you to use a small diameter lathe to do the work.

Just hold the action in a 4 jaw chuck. Any half way qualified machinist could do it. You just need some blocks to keep from maring the finish and a long enough lathe.

Then one of the other options is a rotary table with 4jaw chuck and tail stock for the barrel, all mounted on a mill. Simple process but as with any machining, setup time is the real killer.

HK barrel removal wrench

If you have access to a mill, you can make your own barrel removal wrench from a piece of heavy walled pipe of the proper diameter to fit in the front of the receiver. You would need a piece of pipe the same diameter as the barrel retaining nut and about 4 inches long. Mill a longitudinal slot in it wide enough so it fits around the barrel and then mill off some metal at one end so as to leave some lugs that will fit in the slots of the barrel retaining nut. If you can, imagine a heavy duty Remington 870 fore-end wrench with a slot cut down its length.
You could then weld a handle onto the wrench head. The proper barrel retaining nut torque for the G36 is 66 lb-ft.
No, I don't have one of these wrenches, but a friend of a friend knew a machinist who made one and he used it to remove and do the work on my SL8 barrel.
HK wants $800.00 US for the barrel tool and receiver/chamber mandrel set. I didn't even bother to see what/if R.Nicholls charges. Hope this helps
