Hey...

Quick question for those in the know... can a launcher be mounted to an AR with a 10" BBL? Right now I have a TROY MRF-CX but I'm looking at replacing it ... does the handguard matter? Do I need a specific BBL profile?

I've never really looked at launchers... but enquiring minds.

Cobray manufactured some short launchers with 7" barrels (iirc) that would fit nicely on a 10.5" upper.
If you wanted to keep your forend you'd need to have a mounting system made/modified to fit on the rail.

The way the Cobray is designed with its mounting hardware, the launcher will replace the lower handguard and the upper handguard supplied will slide slightly over the base of the launcher. The only way of getting around this is to cut a hole in your handguards.

Here's what the 12" setup looked like on a 20" upper. I sold off the launcher as I felt it was heavy and flimsy.

I've been meaning to get a shorter version and either find means to mount it or mill out the launcher so it can slide on to the rail.

Well I'm not a SME but the launcher I carried had the lower handguard attached .You will need a certain barrel thickness for the froward clip. Here's a pic of the C8 SFW with the launcher attached, gota love those Recce boy's.

Depends -- if you mean a real 40MM system (as opposed to the rather flimsy 37mm launchers) then the handguard needs to be a freefloat mount systems (KAC URX, DD RISII, or SIR) - as the mounting point for the M203/M203PIP/M203A1 is past the barrel on a 10" -- I have not checked with the HK EGLM - but I think it "may" work.

See the groove on the RO921HB/M4A1 barrel

With a 10" barrel there is not barrel to grab -- and so a FF mount is needed for it to attach to the rail -- or a very funky bastardised mounting system.

I was looking at M203's on LMT's website and they say - "Proprietary launcher designed for use with the LMT Monolithic Rail Platform & other 1913 rail systems."

I currently have a TROY MRX-CF and want to replace it (I'm replacing the LMT BUIS with a folding BUIS... same for the front...) Here's the AR (Muskyhunter holding it...)

To be honest... by the time I buy and M203 I'll probably already have bought more ARs... but I'm just wondering what handguards to get...

Right now I'm thinking LARUE....

Don't know about 10" but I'm positive that I've seen photos of the IDF with 11.5" pencil barrels with a short 40mm launcher attached. Of course if you are using a rail then their are systems out there meant for rail attachment. They might stick out past the front of the barrel though.

I posted this pic in the other 203 thread. It is of the LMT M203 system that utilizes a picatinni rail. I'm told that the mount may not hold up to the rigors of a military training regime, but for our CGN granade matches, I'm sure it'll last many seasons of use. I've had mine since 1989 and have only around 200 rounds through it. (Each one is memorable though:D )

The pic is of a 9" barrel, and if it is cut back to the handguards, it may be the same length as the 10" AR barrel. So it would probably work OK with a 10" AR barrel, if using a RAS type handguard.

Navy - that is an 11.5" - and those 37mm's have different mounting methods over the M203.

Koldt - yeah I discounted LMT's method since it is not possible to have in Canada

Thanks Kevin,

As you can see though, even if you removed the 1.5"between the flash suppressor and the front sight, this would not affect the launcher mounting in this case.

This is how a 37mm launcher can be setup. For a RIS system type setup, I'm not sure how best they'd get setup. I'll leave that to the experts.

NS, I am pretty sure a similar style set up as yours could be done with a 40mm M203. A mount bracket could be installed further back on the top rail, possibley behind the barrel latch, in order to mount as per the way yours is.

But I don't want to "modify"/"custom" my Colt M203 to experiment.

If anyone has one they would like to offer as a demo gun, I'd be willing to do the work:D and see if it could be done.

But again, if you want a 40mm stick with a 14.5 barrel, IMHO.

I should have bought one of the Swiss made 203s when TSE had them. The Swiss ones looked like an excellent piece of kit, and from what I remember more could have been done with it, with mounting issues.

Again if anyone has one they want me to play with, I would be willing out of the goodness of my heart to give it a try.:) :)
