Is the No4 Mk2 cocking piece different from the No4 Mk1 part?

I got a cocking piece with some other parts and it is definitely different from the cocking piece on my Mk2.

There are at least three different cocking pieces for the No4 series Lee Enfields. In my experience they are all interchangeable.

The war expedient type lacks grasping grooves and doesn't have the half #### slot for an option. One type had a round gripping head on the end of the piece, which was later eliminated. This was the early version. Most just have the same cocking piece your rifle came with.

My rifle came with a Type B and the one I got in a lot of parts is a Type D.

The bit that confused / concerned me is the bottom edge cut, or lack thereof in the nose of the Type D. Thats the section that interfaces with the sear, which made me think something was different between the Mk1 and Mk2 rifle triggers.

My two mk2’s have B and C pieces. Type D was a wartime expedient to save time in manufacturing. The type A was the first type used. I have one on my OL Long Branch 1941. They will work if swapped around on different bolts. I have seen the last type but I don’t have one. It is my understanding that they were changed out during FTR so probably the reason not many are seen.

The pic of the Type A is wrong.

The type A in the pick is an early No1 MkIII cocking piece.

The type A was similar but more streamlined without knerling around the outer edge and looked similar to a button, but the rest of the profile was the as type B and C.

All sorts of rumors as to why they went to the type B,C but very likely for the same reason they went with the type D to alleviate costs and time of manufacture.
