LE No5 Jungle Carbine magazine

I was always under the impression that the No5 Jungle Carbine came with 10 round magazines the same as the LE No4. My first No5 came that way.

Recently saw a nice No5 advertised with a 5 round mag. Bought it as I had a spare No4 mag here and the 5 round mag would be a good spare for my Parker Hale Custom hunting rifle. Well, when it arrived, I saw that the 5 round mag had a serial number matching to the receiver. This rifle is in very nice condition.

Did some No5 rifle come with a 5 round mag? I hadn’t seen that before…

Is this a bit of a unicorn?

Someone has renumbwred the mag. Numbers aren’t even and the A’s are wrong. No armourier put those numbers on.

Apparently a 5 round mag is common on East Coast Enfields, there must have been a cottage industry making 5 rounders. The marking on that one is cute, but not authentic. It doers look pretty cool, has kind of an LEC vibe to it.

Thanks, I’d never seen a LE factory 5 round mag, only aftermarket ones. The seller didn’t sell it as an authentic LE mag, just that it came with one. Works great in my Parker Hale, though… No unicorns again, damn…

The only authentic five round mag for Lee Enfields that I know exists is for the Canadian military issue EAL rifle. The commercial version came with LE aperture battle sight and 10 round mag. The military issue EAL had barrel mounted double leaf open sights and a flush fitting five round magazine which is tough to find.
The five rounders are popular here in the Maritimes beacause at one time just about everyone had a Lee Enfield for hunting and they carry one handed much nicer with the 5 round magazine.
