I'm interested in casting lead bullets, what are the pros and cons of lead bullets. are they more dangerous to have around since the lead may be harmful to your health? do they make your gun more dirty than other bullets? is it really dangerous to be exposed to lead fumes from the "gun smoke" or the lead dust that is released into the air when the gun is fired..

Some people still believe lead is harmless, some think it will make you sick just thinking about it. The truth is somewhere in the middle. Breathing in lead dust or eating lead is where the exposure will come from. That said there is lead istyphnate in the primers, and that is spread everytime you shoot, not just with lead bullets.

Lead bullets made and loaded properly shouldnt make your gun any "dirtier" and if they do the lead foulding can be cleaned out.

Personally, I am a huge fan of lead boolits and with the exception of a couple of revolvers have never experienced any leading- in a .303 Brit, microgrooved Marlin .30/30, Norinco .45 acp, Cz75b and G17.
Accuracy is good, and a quick wipe of the bore removes only powder residue.

I cast outside and don't tend to stand over the molten lead, wear gauntlets and eye protection and consider the most dangerous part of the process to be driving to the range!
Seriously, I've read all about the hazards of lead- and am more concerned about centerfire primers and the guy popping off his semi .22lr next to me.

on one of the us forums there was a poll on how was your lead levels

the highest lead levels were from indoor shooters
some of them not bullet casters
some of the smokers that did not cast had high lead levels (so casting is not the problem)

the recommended way to stay away from lead problems is shoot out doors and wash your hands and this is from casters that have cast bullets for 60 plus years

you either breath it in or eat it ( so if you so if you shoot and smoke you might be getting a highter dose)
