So where does everyone get their lead for casting? I have the use of my buddies moulds and equipment but i have not source for lead. I am in The Niagara area, does any one have any suggestions?
Easy. Stop in at a few garages/tire shops and ask for wheel weights. I've heard that some places might give them away, but I've not been that lucky. Usually $20-$25 a pail.
If you know a roofer or contractor they should have access to plumbers lead. This sheet lead was used over soil stacks and roof vents years ago. Now when a roofer does a new shingle job the new covers are synthetic and aliminum. The old sheet lead goes in the dumpster.
If there is a metal recycler in your area stop by there and get wheel weights.
The one here was closed this morning so I stopped at a big tire shop, asked the guy at the counter and he gave me about 20lbs in a box for nothing.
He was telling me that they keep it untill they get a 50lb bucket full and then one of the guys takes it to the recycle place. I gave him my contact info and offered to pick up any more they collect.
I have in the past gone top our outdoor rifle/pistol range during off hours. Just picking through the berm I could net 10 ponds of lead in 15 mins. 10 pounds is only about two handfuls though!
When going to the tire shops, take along a 5 gal plastic pail or two with a good handle and some scrap plywood on the bottom for strength. They often use the same and will swap pails, which is a lot easier than transfering from their pail to what you may have. Quick & easy.
