Is it possible to shoot lead gas checks at 2000+ feet per second in a 30-30 without getting bore leading? If leading occurs, how tough is it to get out? Do gas checks have to be lubed?I have no experience with gas checks. Where can one get gas checks?
Any advice would be appreciated?

Gas checks are copper, and yes no worries, I run 'em at 2150 fps. They crimp on at the same time you size the bullet. The bullet must allow a gas check to be fitted, ie a smaller than bullet diameter base. Oh, the bullets if home grown should be a good mix to make it around 15-18 BHN. 16 being ideal for hunting, most expansion without coming apart.

Gas checks can be purchased from U.S. retailers like Mid-South shooters' supply....the price has risen alot in the last little while......it adds to the cost of cast bullets......3 cents per G.C.....Ellwood Epps carries them in Canada.

Gas Checks

30 Cal gas checks are available at many gun shops in Canada. They are applied usually before the sizing and lubing process. The sizing process crimps them into place. I have used gas check bullets without the gas checks and then loaded the exact same load with the gas checks installed. In almost every instance the gas check set up works better. I have done this test with several calibres and velocity ranges. (900-2000 fps) I am happy with EVERYTHING that improves accuracy!!!
Carry on!

Lyman 311041 with GC is a great bullet for the 30-30. As far as leading is concerned if you experience leading take a small wrap of Chor Boy 100% copper pads and wrap around an old bonze brush. I few stroke and your leading will be out. Works for my pistols and rilfes.

Take Care

Annealing

Some shooters, among them Mr. Ross Seifreid, take time to anneal the gas checks before using them.
They make use of a small cast iron skillett in which they dump the gas-checks and put it on the gas stove.
Heat them good until they turn greenish yellow and you're done.
This makes them dead soft and they won't spring back once crimped.
