Lead shot for gophers?

Lead is banned for migratory birds! Means,as long as your gophers are not going to fly south your fine with lead shot ( or anything else ) :D

Ooo dogies! I use a 12ga. quite a bit for shooting gophers. This summer I hit a bonanza patch. I walked out of my trailer and went about 100'. I had filled my jacket pockets with about 45 rounds. I stopped in a patch and fired the whole works off and never took a step! I just kept turning back and forth and blasting away. I use an old Winchester 50, a Remington 58, and a Beretta 301 bought for this purpose.

It provides a bit of change from smallbore. Plus, blasting with a 12 ga. is good for the soul. I just got a Weatherby SA-08 in 20 ga., so I'll try it out this Spring.:D

Hi KJohn,
I use my old SXS ,a remington 48 and just recently bought a winchester 50...just didn't recive it yet. So,how are they? Anything that needs special attention or care on them?

As mentioned, lead shot for Waterfowl is banned under the Migratory Birds Act.

One of the absurdities is that I can stand in the middle of a field and shoot Upland Game Birds, Varmints, and other things that are legal to shoot, using lead shot, but I am in deep S**T if I shoot a Duck at the same location.

The only limitations of using a shotgun for Gophers instead of a .22 rimifire seems to be expense and range. However, there are certain Community By-laws and ordinances, and I would not really recommend shooting one in Downtown Blairmore or scaring the Tourists at the Frank Slide.

Pretty sure I got that one understood. Although during hunting season (or any season, really) it's not uncommon to hear the odd rifle crack echo down from the mountains while you're shopping in Blairmore or gassing up in Coleman. The folk in this area are pretty accustomed to it. :)
