Hi,

Looking for a good thermometer so I can control my melting of wheel weights......just to avoid the sorting mostly.

Also where do you get them? I have looked around and even at graingers they had no idea what I was talking about.

Thanks

Greg

I am also using a propane turkey frier to melt/ clean my lead. I have found it doesn't get hot enough to melt the nasty zinc weights. Once the lead ones melt, I just scoop off the clips and crap into an old coffee can then start pouring into the ingot molds.

I also have the one made by Lyman - has a little spring clip thing - can hang off the rim of your pot and you can set where the bottom end of the probe sits. Is quite useful, I find, to see the actual temperature of the melt when casting - sometimes have to slow down or stop to let system catch up, especially when adding more ingots. I have used it in an RCBS cast iron pot on a camp stove, in a Lee bottom pour electric pot and in a Hornady (?) 20 pound capacity electric pot meant to be used with a ladle for casting.

I’m melting 40-50lbs at a time on a turkey cooker in a cast iron pot. How do i use the pid?

In that case, you're only going to be using the probe and readout for the temperature display. You could use it to control your casting pot if it's electric as well.

If only using the display, why not buy just the display? There is no need to go to the expense and time of buying and assembling a PID.

just get an electronic pyrometer. The last one I picked up came from Princess Auto and was under $40, about 5 years ago.

It has a readout range to around 600F or 325C.

You point it at the surface you want to measure the temp on, press the button and a red dot, from a laser shows up on the surface. About a second later, the temp will appear on a digital readout screen.

It even comes with 2 ea AA batteries.

No probes that get tangled or broken or warped from the heat.

I believe, Canadian Tire carries them as well. Walmart online has one on sale now.

I have a couple of those infrared thermometers. One from Princess Auto and one from Harbor Freight. So take the quality for what they are worth. They work good for deep frying and the canning kitchen but did not work on my lead pot. At least they were not even close to the lyman thermometer. so I gave up on that plan. I think for most of us and our ability with a handgun ,If you can get the bullets we make to pour properly temp is not critical. Long range rifle bullets is another story. I like my 500gr.plus bullets to be within 3 tenths of a grain and for me it is much easier to get there if I can keep the temp controlled. I have not used a PID but it should be an exultant addition to a rifle casting set up. I hand pour rifle bullets and bottom pour pistol bullets.
