To say that this reloading experience is learning is an understatement.

Today while loading some 45 ACP in used brass I came upon some Speer Brass 45 auto as well as some Win NT 45 auto that seems to be fired by small pistol primers. Most of the brass I was reloading was Federal and I had no problem but there is no way the large pistol primers are going into the Speer and Win Nt brass.

Sure glad I am still green at this and being very cautious. Anyone else experience this or is this brass from something completely different than my 45 pistol?
 
The Winchester NT uses a small pistol primer. I wasn't aware that Speer also made a small pistol primer case, but if it is a single flash hole, then it shouldn't be a problem.
This illustrates the need to check and sort cases before you start reloading them. Unless they are going straight from a brass catcher into your bag, (and even then), you need to check all cases for faults. If you are picking up from the range this is even more important. Not only will you find the different primer sizes, but other problems (such as someone hot loading the brass until the headstamps disappear).
I separate out the NT cases and recycle them, as I don't want them to get mixed up with the rest. If you have lots and lots, then you could consider loading them as one batch.
 
Set the small primered cases aside. When you have enough saved, there are people that will buy them in the EE. Theres also NUY brass that is small primered as well.
 
"...is this brass..." Nope. Just an environmentally friendly priming compound. Winchester says they're not reloadable, but I suspect they just don't sell the NT primers. Stupid name for 'em too. Win NT means Windows New Technology. snicker.

i have them in such quantity that i converted my 45 lee 1000 over to run small primers exclusively- ccis and winchester small pistols fit in there just fine
 
Just like you I didnt knew these existed until I tried to press a large primer into a small hole, I got a big BOOM.

I now check 45acp brass one by one before dumping them into my Loadmaster. I used to only check the upper rim for crack never bother with the primer hole

I think it was a dumb Ideal , When are they converting 9mm to their NT extra small primer ?
