I am going to look at a Lebel rifle made in 1916 with bayonet. I realize that prices vary with condition, condition condition condition! Could someone give me a ball park price range? Please no assinnine comments about the French.

Jean,

It is a Lebel made at St Etienne.

TheIndifferent1,

That is beautiful, are the long rifles rarer than the carbines? I have been reading that in the 30's most of the long rifles were chopped to carbine length.

Thanks

Is it a Lebel or a Berthier big difference in the price.

- Lebel 1886/93/R35 carbines are much rarer then the Lebel 1886/93 rifles. A nice matching rifle will sell for $400.00 to $500.00 and bayonet go from $75.00 to $100.00

- TheIndifferent1, yours is a Berthier Model 1907/15 rifle with a Model 1886 bayonet .

Jean, the receiver reads St. Etienne M LE.M.16. Barrel is dated 1917. I do have a 1907/15 Delaunay Belleville carbine though.

What were the difference between the M16 and the 1907/15? They do look very similar. It seems my collection has several oddities :)

The French suffered massive casualties in the trenches in WW1, rifles were salvaged from the battlefields and rebuilt with available parts at the time. So markings on receivers mean very little, I have seen a lot of mix and match rifles over the years. Model 1916 built onto 1907/15, and 1907/15 into 1916 and some 1916 with or without handguards.
