I currently have 2 single stage presses, a Dillon SDB and now a Lee 1000 for .223.

I just got the Lee set up last night. it seems to work fairly well, Set up took just under 2hrs (including tweaking), it probably helps that I am not totally ignorant of progressive presses, but.....

I find the shell feeder needs to be tweaked, sometimes it double feeds cases(any suggestions)

I assume I need to trim my cases BEFORE I put them through the machine, but to what length should I trim the cases before running them through (I was thinking 1.745).

I am using Hornady one shot case lube.... How long should I wait (after spraying them) before I run them through the press? Usually I wait about 1 min, but i then usually clean the cases again (when using a single stage press)

I looked at the chart for the powder dispensor, I am currently using the 1.57 (the biggest one that came with the kit) it is supposed to throw 25.3gr of Benchmark, but it actually throws 21.9gr..... much to little, I would like to see 25.5gr. I assume all I need is the Lee auto disk kit expansion (I saw one the other day at the local g-store)

Any other tips and tricks would be great!

Cheers!

I was looking at the LEE web site and they make an adapter so you can use 2 disks to get larger loads out of the powder measure......

I think it's a little ghey that they didn't include that kit with the Lee 1000 for .223..... it does use a bit more powder than a pistol cartridge! :(

It is only a $15 part (on their web site) anybody know where I can get one here in canuckistan?

i've had one for years, but i've got a DILLON powder measure installed- that has enough capacity-you should be able to get a double disk kit through higginson- as for the double case feed, i haven't experienced it yet- as for trimming, i use the lee trimmer, so the length is pre-determined

Lee double disk can be ordered directly from Lee Precision but you may get hit with a $45 shipping fee so order all the dies shell plates etc that you may need as this is a flat shipping fee for international orders as I recall

Order the double disk through Higginsons in Ontario, or pick it up at one of the dealers. I use the lee trimmer too, works good, probably loaded about 1200 on it so far. Slower going than loading for pistol, but makes good ammo!

If I were to use a progressive for 223 loading, I would first lube and run the brass through a body die, throw them back into the tumbler to remove the lube THEN put them into the progressive.

Of course, trimming would be done before hand too.

In the press, I would use the Lee collet neck die and follow the rest of the steps per usual. I can offer the double disk kits if you can't find them locally.

As long as the powder would meter well, it would sure speed up the making of bulk ammo.
