LEE says to use only pure lead or the slug will get irremediably stuck to the mold's key...

Has anybody used range lead (22lr and lead cores)?

Also has anybody used the .690 RB?

Thanks

Range lead is is soft. The first few casts always stick on the plug, until everything is up to temperature. Aluminum moulds need a layer of smoke residue on them to fill out properly and helps the bullet release from the mould.
The 0.690 ball I have used in my 12ga muzzleloader.

I Made several hundred yesterday with a mix from WW and Lee key mold. Never got one stuck.

For release agent I used alcohol mixed with blue chalk from a refill for a carpenters chalk line. Apply with Q-tip.

I have had no problems with we lead or anything else for that matter.

I have also used .690 round balls I used data that called for at least 1 1/8oz of shot and a Winchester red wad(or clay buster replacement). under the ball is a dunut wad to center the ball for the best results.

As always with shotshell follow the data and do no substitute components there is no signs of over pressure with a shotgun shell.

I had the lee and Lyman slug molds.
Ran a lead/tin mix. Soot the mold and it was fine.
I just used a candle to match.

Not that I ever had one stick. But it would re-soot the mold maybe every 25 casts or so

Make sure your mold is pre heated too

I have used various slugs with various results. For fun plinking the .690 ball are easy to load and are as good as most slugs, I use a modest load of UNIQUE powder for plinking.

What is the weight of the .690 ball?

Thanks guys. I almost bought the RB but fell back on the slug as my latest shotgun has a full choke. I mostly want to substitute slug to shot.
What diameter do you get?

Nice table legion; I used to check that on Beartooth.

.690 will go through a full choke and is just about the only non custom mold available. I have used .600 round balls in a few loads too mainly buck and ball.

the Lee slugs I get out of my mold are 0.685 - 0.689"
I load them in shotcups
The only certain way to find out if they will clear your choke is to push one through.

Thank you. I hoped that the slug could be just dropped in a petal wad, as I remembered from an older thread, and used in any gun.

My vernier caliper was "lost" years ago but what I have says that my [full] choke is about .69, so no room for the wads petals. It's not a biggie as I was planning on cutting some of the 30 inches off anyways.

I’d leave the barrel alone kinda hard to find a 30 inch barrel. Lee slugs and a wad will fit through the choke no problem.
