Lee 1oz Slug Load Data?

Hi All

I recently purchased a Lee 1oz Key slug mould and have cast about 150 of the little gems. The mould comes with recipes but I am having a hell of a time getting the powder locally. Here's what I want to use from the Lee data (because the gunshop had the wads in stock)

12 ga. Win AA hull
1 oz. Lee slug
31 grs. HS6 reduced from the lee info because I am using Win Universal Hulls and wanted to start with a milder load.
WAA12F114 wad
W209 primer

Neither of the gunshops locally has HS6 or Win 209 primers in stock, they have Red Dot and Green Dot powder and CCI and Fed 209 primers. There are no loads provided by LEE for the Red or Green Dot powder so I was wondering what the equivelent load of 31 grs HS6 would be with red or green dot?

Would I also be able to safely use CCI or Fed 209 primers with the red or green dot load requested above? No Win 209s in stock either...

I am new to this and have been doing a lot of reading, but I have been unable to find a lot of 1oz slug loads in my book or online and no reference for substituting powder and primers. Right now I am stuck with hulls, wads, slugs and nothing to fire them.

Thanks for any input

I'll look you up some data from the Lyman shotgun reloading manual there should be lots...............Harold *** just on my way out the door

Thanks for the info and looking up the data Harold. Lymans was the book that one of the guys at the gunshop suggested, of course no one had a copy in stock locally.

If I was thinking, I should have ordered everything online last week when I got my melting pot.

Lyman doesn't have any data for Lee 1oz slugs?Look at the cast boolits website they recommend AA hull,20gr Green Dot + Win pink wad. Also stated Blue Dot had best accuracy but no data?Any one ounce trap load should be fine just the wad height will vary.Harold

Thanks for the help mbogo.

The gunshop had the HS6 waitiing for me when I got there today. They received it late Friday. I picked it and some CCI209 primers up and went to work.

I loaded 20 slugs with 30.4 grains in the Universal hull with the F114 wad and went to the range. most of my shots were on target no keyholes, with a lot less kick than target loads. I loaded light for a first try. Aiming with just the front bead is a bit of a challenge.

When I got home, I loaded 40 more with 31 grains to test tomorrow. I figured there was no sence going right to the 35 grain top from the Lee data because I am looking for a nice balance of power and recoil. I am just a target shooter with a smoothbore and no choke in my mossberg slug shooter.

If the slugs make a nice mess of the leftover haloween pumpkins for the same price as target loads at CT I'm a happy guy!

I am already thinking that the 100 primers I picked up are not enough untill the store opens again.

The one thing I did notice was that there was a lot of residue in my barrel from the 30.4 loads. IS that common with HS-6?

Thanks again for checking the Lyman data.

Not sure what HS6 duplicates but I think HS7 is the old Win 571? Don't quote me on that but same stuff if memory serves me correctly...............Harold

Some powders burn cleaner at a higher pressure.
I couldn't aim with the front bead so I put a red-dot on my Mav88.
Soon I'll get a T-dot instead. :D

Ya, it's a point and guess at best with just the bead. Before I started this project I read that people couldn't find the target or the stand with Lee slugs so I am pleased with the outcome for a first try.

I had a 3" stick on target in the middle of a large pizza box and the majority of my shots were a little high right or below the target at 25 yards from a 19" smoothbore Mossberg 400g. I was happy to hit the cardboard based on what I had read.

Not an award winning group but they were "close enough" for me

Good for you. Scoped I can get 10" groups at 50m.
The thing with removable barrel shotguns like Mossberg pumps is the barrel can move ever so slightly in relation with the action. If I could get my hands on a barrel with integral scope mount, I'm sure I could get decent groups even at 100m.

If it wasn't for the rainy weather today my plan was to tale my Norc HP9 out to the range and see if it grouped any better with the Lee slugs. Maybe after work tomorrow... I have my doubts about a scope being useful on a smooth bore, maybe a test for later.
