I cast over 700 .40 S&W on Saturday, alox lubed, then sized, then alox lubed again.

After drying overnight, I reloaded 700 rounds on Sunday. My question is,

Am i the only one who finds Alox a dirty sticky mess ? The brass gets all sticky and dirty, not to mention that little particles tend to accumulate on the lead especially on the tip of the bullet where it can impact the seating depth.

A one hour tumble cleaned most of the guck, but small particles still stick to the bullet tips, very annoying

Is alox really the best way to go here, or am I better off just pan lubing the base of the bullet, leaving the exposed part of the bullet nice and clean?

alox

you might want to dilute your alox with about 40% mineral spirits. Also, I put the plastic bottle in very warm water prior to using the alox, and I use it sparingly.
I find that it helps the drying process and the " stickyness ".
I alox my bullets, run them through the lee sizer, then coat them with melted johnsons paste wax.....works for me and my bore is shiny and easy to clean.

cheers:)

I cast and lube about 7000 bullets a year and I use Lee liquid alox. I have found that the process needs to happen about 1 month before I reload the cases. Casting lubing resizing, lubing and then wait for a month to dry in a warm spot, larger bullets 2 months. Then I get very little lube coming off the bullets.
I try and cast 5000 200gr 45acp bullets in June/July then lube, resize, lube again and set them aside for 3 months before reloading them in Oct. Then I reload them and shoot them all off from Nov to April. use to be $2.90 a box before the increase in components.
I think you would find any lube sticky trying to reload them right away.
My 2 cents

I like the lube with lee tumble lube bullets from their molds. If other molds I use a magic mix in the lube grooves prior to sizing.
The tumble lube I use a bit in a butter dish , then let dry , size, a bit more lube, then pour out on a wax paper to dry before loading.

Sum up, lee tumble lube bullets, require alox , others require heavier lube in the grooves.

I used Alox, once..
Now I melt my kids broken colouring crayons into a pan, roll the pistol bullets around before standing them up on toilet paper to dry.
Easy clean up, no leading!

Get yourself a lube-sizer and be done with it, you can experiment with diff. lubes to see which works best without making a mess, you can also experiment with diff. sizes. I stay away from Alox even in my diff. lubesizers as it is a mess to handle and reload, I prefer my own lube made from Bees wax and carnauba wax among other ingredients.

I have tried many different lubes on the bullets. Before I had a lube/sizer I tried water pump grease, (sorry if you young guys don't know what that is) partly because it was recommended to me and partly because I was able to just use my fingers to fill the grooves.
The first lube I used was bees wax and beef suet, blended. In hot weather use more wax and less suet. With the lube/sizer I have used commercial sticks with the nice hole through it, but mostly pour my own mixture directly into it and let it harden.
If there is a bottom line to this, I would say it is that I have not found any mixture to be much (maybe any) better than the next thing I tried. Or any lube that I decided was no good!
They all seemed to have worked about the same.
