Picked up Lee Auto Prime tool figured should save me some time....and just found out that regular (lee) shell holders don't fit! :( Someone told me I need to buy a special set of shell holders for it. :rolleyes:That's just stupid!

Anyone modified the Auto prime tool to be used with regular shell holders?

Which one do you have ?
I have an old style with special Lee screw shell holders.
But as far as I know for a number of years the Auto primer takes a regular shell holder.
Go to the Lee site under the instructions & you can download a pdf file.

nope- the autoprime takes a special shell holder without a neck - like a thick washer- mine go back to 1990 and they're that way- completely different from a snap-in shell holder for the press- and that pdf file isn't going to help- however a look in the catalogue would have saved you- it's clearly shown- and there's no way to modify the auto to take regular shellholders as it sits in a special groove on the holder- if you muist use your regular shellholder, you're going to have to cut the neck off- for 3bucks?

It's just regular Auto Prime I got it new...and no regular shell holders don't fit...

I did look at the catalouge but didn't see anythng about the special shell holders...

I was thinking of widening the auto prime body so it can fit the rim. It doen't seam to need that much more room...btw how tall is the special shell holder? Is it a lot shorter than the 'regular' one? just wondering if will work if I'll make it fit...

OK looks like it won't work :( regular shell holder is too tall so the priming rod wouldn't reach the case...

Where can I get special 9mm and .45ACP shell holders?

I went back to the Lee site.
It does not state that you need special shell holders.
But, unless it is well hidden, I cannot see where it says that you need special ones. Therefore my assumption would be they use regular ones.

But then we should never assume should we. Good to know as I was thinking of buying a new one. I will stick with the old one. Slower but I have shell holders.

Quote from a store in US (doesn't ship to Canada :()...

Includes 11 of the most popular shellholders which will work with more than 115 different cartridges .... For use with the Lee Auto Prime only, not compatible with reloading presses or Lee Auto Prime 2.

I just need a couple so don't want to spend $23...
Would've got a Auto Prime 2 if I knew about this yearlier...

Strikeraj did you check Shooters choice or Lowets (sp?) in Kitchener?

Higginson also has them at $ 4.00 each.

The set is 11 for $ 23.00 which is only a good deal if you need them all.
If you only need one or two then I would suggest $ 4.00 each.

Anyone got a set but doesn't use #2 shell holder? I'll take it off your hands ;)

I just checked Wholesale and looks like they sell them for like $2.89 each but the shipping will be $8.95 lol...

what do you mean by special?- the ones you need for the autoprime is a#2 for the 45 auto, which also fits the whole set of 30cals, the 8mm mauser and all others with the 30-06head -90202- it also lists a 6 and 19 for the 9mm luger, but i use the 6-that's what my shellplate is numbered - your stock number for that is 90206- and in your neck of the woods, higginson
on page 24 of the catalogue, you can see if you look at the small picture that the shellholder has no neck-
your listing of shellholders is just below- look up your cartridge from the big list on the right, get your holder number, then go to the chart on the left and get your stock number- this listing is duplicated on page 7, but only lists the 1 shellholder number for 9mm- i can tell you for a fact that the die set and the lee 1000 for 9mm come with a #6 shellplate /holder as i have no #19s anywhere in my collection

t-star--I meant auto prime shell holders...and I thought they use different shell holders for rifles...

chappy--I already bought the LEE product so now just need the the shell holder

My die set came with #19 and both pro 1000 in 9mm came with #19 shell plates as well . The lee website lists the replacement shell plate for the 9mm #19 as well, Also if you go to there website click on Dies and select parts for 9mm the #19 is the shell holder listed

According to my Lee 2007 cataloge on page 18 it states the #6 shell plate is for the 32/20,25/20 and on page 24 it reads 9mm uses #19 & #6 then states"NOTE:WHERE TWO NUMBERS ARE MARKED THE FIRST NUMBER IS THE BETTER CHOICE" , Number 19 is the first one in line

i guess it's whatever they have on hand when they make these units up- my 1000 dates from 1990, and it started life as a 9mm factory build-
and, yes, there are different shellholders for rifles, but it DEPENDS on the cartridge- ie, the heads are the same for the 45 acp and the 308/30-06 , 8mm, and there's probably a host of others- the 223, however looks like it'll take a 9mm head, but it's different- uses a #4 holder- anyway, those stock numbers will get you through - jic you can't find it, the shell holder for a 19 is90023- i have found it advantageous to buy 2 of the auto-primes, and set one up for large primers and the other for small- that way all you have to do is change shellholders
