I bought a set of used Lee 45acp dies a while ago and with Winter here (read reloading season) I finally took a look at them. I feel I am missing a part.....? The only other pistol dies I have are a set of RCBS, so maybe I am just looking at these wrong? This set didn't come with instructions... or the top of the container for that matter... but I believe this is the die to flare the case mouth as I can identify the decap/resize and the bullet seater dies. I feel there should be something to screw into the top of the die, and if that's the case, what is that part called so I can search for a replacement

Thanks!

It should have a part that looks like the top piece on the seating die. They might even be interchangeablewith the same threads. The right part has a hole through it.

Lots of people put a powder measure on there as mentioned so if you ask around I bet someone has a spare kicking around.

Higginsonpowders dot com is a distributor who can get any parts you need too.

Thanks team. I am running a single stage RCBS press, so no powder measure for me. I'm planning to go to the gun show in Lethbridge in 2-3 weeks, so I'll look around the tables there first. If nothing shows up there, I'll post on EE and/or go through a vendor

You don't actually need that "missing" piece, it'll function on a single stage just fine

Good to know. I thought that without something to support against the top of the flairing piece it would just move out of the way when I tried to bell the case mouth?

Without that piece the expander just moves up without expanding the case mouth. It also controls how much you open up the case mouth. The piece was probably taken out and a Lee powder measure used in its place and part was lost. Works the same as RCBS or Lyman set. Screw it in and opens the mouth up more.

you need the aluminum 'powder through the die' bit, it screws into the top and stopes the expanders travel so you can flare the case mouth. The lee funnel fits inside the part and you can flare the mouth and add the powder in the same step if you wanted to.

I have several that I took out of expander dies so I could use various powder measures. If you were closer I'd happily give you one but the shipping from Ontario to BC would be atrocious. I bet if you place a WTB ad on the EE Reloading board someone near to you would give you a freebie.
