LEE Dies

Other than the Lee Deluxe set separating the seat/crimp functions how do they differ?

There are 2 things I prefer about the Hornady set. If a die can both seat and crimp that's preferable than using 2 separate dies to accomplish the same task to me. The other thing I much prefer is the Hornady floating sleeve for bullet seating.

I understand that Hornady is your preference but you made it sound like only the Lee set had an "extra die that didn't do anything". Are you talking about the expanding die? Because both sets include one; or were you implying that separating the seat/crimp functions creates a useless die in your opinion?

oh the seating dies that roll crimp

fine if your using bullets that have a cannelure if not you have a good chance of bumping the shoulder back.

the lee crimp die is the answer if your want to crimp bullets without cannelure

now some lee dies are bullet seat and roll crimp as well so you have to be careful adjusting the dies.

nothing wrong with other dies, come calibers I use a mix and match of dies, RCBS, Pacific, Hornady, but the Lee factory crimp is a nice additions to the lineup.

I have mostly Lee and a few Forster dies. Lee stuff is good if you're mechanically inclined. For me the little quirks are worth paying half the price of RCBS for, in my case, a better designed product. Mainly the FL dies, I like the fact that I can drift a stuck case out of a Lee FL die in seconds. I also prefer the lock rings over the RCBS since they make adjustments faster and easier. Not that RCBS is junk, I've owned their dies but prefer Lee. Now for precision I reach for Forster. I love their BR FL and seater dies paired with Redding comp shell holders. As to the Lee Ultimate 4 die sets I own one in .223 and added the neck die to a .308 pacesetter set. They really are good die sets. The seating dies work best with low BC hunting and plinking bullets. The seating stem shape doesn't work well with high BC bullets. Love the crimp die since I dislike roll crimp seaters. Just personal preference, I feel the FCD is more consistent.

I have a bit of everything. Lee, Baer, RCBS, Lyman, and Hornady. I love and exclusively use Lee for sizing and decapping. I roll crimp with the seating die for 30-30 and 9mm, since I use cast bullets. The crimp die is used when there's no crimp ring on the bullet. I have some, but have yet to use them.

On a side note, I really like the Hornady seating die for my 22 hornet... It makes handling those tiny bullets and delicate brass really easy.

For pistol it's
FL resize
Case mouth expander
Bullet seater
Crimper
Other brands seat and crimp , so one less die

This, and the Lee dies do not feature a lock ring. For pistol and revolver calibers, I much prefer Hornady and RCBS dies, both of which crimp and seat at once. The lock ring is also a big plus.

I don't think everyone knows what the forth lee die does. It crimps and the bottom carbide insert makes sure it will fit the chamber. I don't know if Lee still makes it but they had the 1000 in a four hole design. I really liked my 1000 (3 hole) and because the case feed worked so well it was very fast.
