Lee Enfield and Mosin headspace gauge

I have a Hungarian M-44 that came without a bolt, in a fairly screwed up stock. I bought a random Mosin bolt for it, which turned out to be for a Finnish M-39. Before I filed the tabs off the connecting rod, I posted a pic of it on this forum, and a cgn'r informed me what it is, and offered to trade me a run of the mill Mosin bolt for it. Which I was happy to do as it helped complete his M-39, and it was of no use to me as it was.

Anyway, the bolt he traded me works just great. But a couple of times now it has had a hard time closing on a fresh round. It feels like the headspace might be tight. Or it might have been a couple of out of spec rounds. In any case, it probably is nothing I have to worry about too much.

This rifle is a project of mine. I have it in an Archangel stock, with a Timney Trigger. I just finished rigging up a bent bolt handle, and am currently looking at scope options. Leaning toward a POSP at this point. My plan is to hunt with this little fire breather. :)

My way of checking headspace on a Mosin is to;

- Load rifle.

- Extend rifle as far from my body as my arms can reach.

- Fire rifle.
