Quick question for the LE gurus out there; I saw a Jungle Carbine at a show recently that got the hamster wheel in my head rolling. This old rifle had the flash hider removed, and the barrel looked awful short, and upon further research I saw that from the factory the barrel was 18.8 inches long. The flash hider is about 2 inches, so would removing it and thus rendering the barrel about 17 inches make the rifle prohib? If I see another one for cheap I'd consider buying it and adding the flash hider after but wouldn't want to walk into a legally problematic rifle.

No. The barrel length laws are complex, so don't cite me as your defence in court. Don't confuse US laws about 16" barrels with Canadian laws.

The law never really cared about short barrels on bolt actions. The cops and the prosecutors were always more concerned about M1 carbines hacked down so short the bank robbers could hide them like machine pistols. Section 84(1) of the Criminal Code ( http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-46/page-19.html?txthl=barrelled+barrel#s-84 ) has the specific language.

84 (1)(b) a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,

(i) is less than 660 mm in length, or

(ii) is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,

As I read that, if the barrel left the factory at some short length that is legit. If a previous owner cut or intentionally altered its length, that is not allowed.

This was my assumption, as adding any form of muzzle device does not legally increase the barrel length and there for chafe a rifles classification.
