Lee-Enfield/FNC1/C7 slings

Here's a question for all you lads in the forces of the Commonwealth or USA- when you put your assigned rifle in the lockup, were you required to tighten the sling to parade standard, or could you leave it adjusted for use? This may seem like a silly question, but I notice that many of the Lee-Enfield slings are frayed and worn, and I wonder if I should just leave mine adjusted for use since they are mint original WWII web slings. I use mine as hasty slings when I fire my rifles. Many thanks, and I hope everyone had a nice Canada Day and/or Independence Day!
 
In current Cdn service, we had to remove our slings. They were "B" class accountable at one time, and if you left it on your rifle, you were lucky if it was there when you got your rifle the next time. Same deal with any accessories...backup sights, cleaning kits, or unauthorized add ons.

Funny that you could leave a $700 scope on the rifle, but not a $6 sling.

Same back in C1 days. Probably because they don't want wet slings hanging off a bunch of racked rifles in a closed room for days or weeks. Likewise keeping the RQ happy with his counts.
 
Yup...slings are part of EIS and not serialized. They go in the bag with your 5 mags, bayonet and BFA. The beauty is that if you don't get a chance to clean your EIS someone else gets your dirty crap next time!

Now that we have two slings in the system, you may be lucky and draw and tactical/patrol sling. It allows you to carry the weapon slung at all times and simply pull a tab to extended the sling to length that allows firing. Some guys hate them, but I personally like them...except when used with an M203, they can be a bit awkward.

The only time I've ever left a sling on is they day before a change of command parade, and it was the white ceremonial sling and I don't want to get into that.
 
Funny, we left our slings on when we turned ours in. All we did was remove the bolt carrier group and hand it over to the angry man in the cage. God help you if you didn't initial where he told you!
 
I have never seen guys take off the old C7 slings. But the new jungle slings most guys do remove them.

As for your sling dont worry, they get worn from heavy field use and not from ajusting it time to time.
 
Yeah, the standard when I joined was tighten the slings so that they wouldn't get caught in the racks or wrapped around another rifle. Then we switched to the C7 and the slings had to be tightened or removed because they said the slings would swing randomly and set off the motion detectors (rubbish) but now, as stated, it is because they are accountable (and the rifle often won't fit in the rack so the SQ staff have to remove them). As for the patrol sling, it's more of a guard duty sling. I made one that is much more simple and still works with the C7A2 (rubbish) with an M203.
If you're truely worried about sling wear, don't use your vintage ones. There are plenty of new durable slings that still look good.

We wrap the sling around the sight after weve removed the bolt group for turn in. Just the way my unit does it.
