Lee Enfield Magazines...

I just bought a Lee Enfield No. 1 Mark III in .303 British and it came with one magazine.

Can I use magazines for any Lee Enfield as long as its .303 British or do they have different ones for the No 1. Mark III and No. 4 Mark I for example?

I believe they do.
I have 10 LE's and a dozen spare mags. All but two of them will interchange.
The ones that don't work will fit in, but fall out when the rifle is fired or shocked. I would double check for this when you get another mag.

Why would you need more than one mag? LE's were never issued with more than one. You just need some chargers.

+1 ...... :)

Get some chargers off folks here in the EE or check for them at guns shows............

Then... practice, practice, practice..... :D :D

I also picked up 30 rounds of inert proper weight .303 that we use for practicing speed reloading for old rifle IPSC matches.........

+2! Yah what he said. :D

Find Chargers, LOAD THEM THE RIGHT WAY the rims of the cartridges should look like this in the chargers ---> _-_-_

Then find a surplus canvas bandoler to hold all your charged ammo, and you are good to go. :D

This is after all what the rifle was built for... Besides the money you save on Mag's you can spend on ammo, and reloading equipment. :)

A lot of folks forget to do this..........

"...do they have different ones for the No 1. Mark III and No. 4..." Yep. Single locking lug on a No. 4 mag. Two on a No.1. They're not interchangeable.

This would explain why some of Pirate's mags fall out.:p

The Brits saw no reason to pay good money to manufacture more than one mag per rifle when you could reload them using chargers. As a matter of fact early Lees had the mag chained to the rifle to prevent such tom-foolery. (They also had cut-offs in the mags to stop the troops from burning up their ammo.)
Waste-not Want-not!

Actualy the first Lee enfields were issued with two magazines, the purpose of the link was to make cure you didn't lose one of them The practice was quickly dispensed with.

But like everyone has said, this ain't no SLR.;)

Hey, Leftent...

Didn't they still have those chains on the C1 mags when you were a member of the CF?

;)

(Just kidding, Rich! You know I love you - Like a brother, that is - Not as in a one Cowboy to another...!!)

Hey Nelly, aren't the Mounties kind of like "cowboys".... hee hee :D

Been along time since we've "chatted". Are you still a big Enfield fan? I for one have sold almost all my Enfields over the part 2 years or so.

I have noted that many WWII Lithgow Mk III will accept and feed from the Magazines intended for the No. 4 rifle. I have not found the same to be true for the Brit manufactured MkIIIs or the No.1 Mk III< or for the Ishapores.

Naw! They just had return springs on them:D

(Still trying to come up with a witty comeback to that cowboy comment! )

Here's a slightly related question. I have a #5 with a weak mag spring, won't reliably feed the last 2-3 rounds. Does anyone know if and/or where I can find a new spring? If I can find a new spring, can i remove the follower by tipping it out sidways without wrecking it? Thanks!!

Darren

To remove the follower and spring ,push down on the rear of the follwer all the way, that should #### the front of the follower up, pull it back and out.The spring clips into the follower.Duker
