ConverteD

It is an earlier version Lee-Enfield converted to MkIII specifications. The opposite side of the butt socket should have the markings of the original. These conversions were approved in 1907 and yours was done in 1908. Need some more pictures.

Hello Gerard. You have a Rifle, short, magazine Lee Enfield, converted Mark IV which is a (long) Lee Enfield rifle converted to a SMLE. The
conversion date is 1908 (or 09 - hard to read). The right side of the socket will give you the original manufacturer and date and model. JOHN

I believe this rifle is junk, charger bridge has been removed and 6 holes drilled in left side from scope mounts. 4 holes at the rear are close together and one drilled in through the middle of the bolt lug recess. Markings on the right side of socket have been scrubbed. I wouldn't fire this one but I will keep the parts. I got it today and was curious about the markings but then I removed the side mount and found this :

The trigger guard screw is a replacement and has probably damaged the threads in the receiver. The original screw had 37 threads per inch - an antiquated Enfield pitch.
Either the BA3 or BA4 screws have 36 tpi and I have used one of these in mounting a PH 5A sight when I needed a longer screw. I used a brass screw, so the screw would get slightly chewed up, rather than the receiver.
I think that it's just a parts rifle with its value in the magazine.
