I have a L.E. rifle marked:
/53 (serial Number) No.4 Mk1*3(F)FTR
Long Branch 1942
What I'm wondering about is the *3. Is that another designation for a .22 LR trainer?
I've been told it was a cadet rifle.

In 1953 the rifle went through a Factory Thorough Repair at Fazakerley and was converted by having the trigger hung from the butt socket instead of the trigger guard.
That is not a .22 trainer designation.
Some No. 4 rifles were used by cadets. Heaven only knows if yours was.

Hi gerry. In 1953 the rifle was converted as stated by others. When you convert a No.4 Mk I to the 'new' trigger system its called a
No.4 Mk 1/2. When you convert a No.4 Mk 1* its called the No.4 Mk 1/3. John

There are No.4 Mk I rifles, No.4 Mk I* rifles, and No.4 Mk II rifles. The main difference between the three is how the trigger is hung, the first two being on the trigger guard while the latter is off a lug on the receiver.

There are conversion processes that occurred to bring rifles up to the Mk. II standard which is why you will see Mk 1/2 and Mk 1/3. A No.4 Mk I upgraded to the Mk II standard is a Mk 1/2. A No.4 Mk I* upgraded, is a Mk. 1/3.

As for .22 calibre trainers, of the No.4 style, those would be the No.7, No.8, and No.9 rifles.
