Lee Enfield Monte Carlo Stock?

Hi Guys,

Just wondering where the best place to find a Monte Carlo stock for a Lee Enfield SMLE. I recently purchased a Sporterized 1917, but the wood has seen better days. I've been considering refinishing it, but was also considering that a new stock might get me a better length of pull as I find the SMLE to be a bit short. I see that Marstar has a couple options, but more shopping is never a bad thing!

Thanks in advance!

Mike

I haven't tried one personally but I've heard the fit of the for-end leaves something to be desired.

I think it could be worth it for the buttstock though. A little more length and a cheek riser are a big help.

"...Marstar has a couple options..." Monte Carlo stocks are for rifles with scopes. That your plan? Synthetics stock will increase the felt recoil. Length can be added with a slip on recoil pad for not a huge pile of money. Pachmayr makes a decent one that add about an inch.
The real pity is the loss of Bishop Stocks, long ago(30 plus years). They made high end quality wood stocks for milsurps without a big price tag. You might find one at a gun show or in a shop's 'old stuff' bin, but I doubt it.

Plastic stock sets by RamLine and ATI are available from Wholesale Sports and Cabelas Canada, respectively, and from other retailers. Boyds currently offers a butt stock only, of wood laminate in three colour variants. Export is no problem as it is only US$60. Nice wooden stocks by Sile of Italy are normally found attached to old sporter conversions by Parker Hale and a few less prolific names. You may find one of these separate from the original rifle at a gunstore or from a dealer at a gunshow.

What Butt is on your rifle NOW?

They were made with 4 different lengths of Butt: Short, Normal, Long and an extra-short one called Bantam.

They are marked B for Bantam, S for Short, N (or nothing) for Normal and L for Long.

Takes about 15 minutes to change-out a Butt (you MUST remove the Fore-end wood FIRST!).

Hope this helps.

There are also Canadian XL (Extra-Long) and XXL (Extra-Extra-Long) Butts made for the Number 4.

One of these can be modded to fit the earlier SMLE in under an hour.

The XXL, I think, was designed for Orang-utans: very damn long indeed!

I don't have a scope on mine, and I believe its a S or short. At least there is an S in a half worn off circle on the side of the butt. I was thinking of getting the ATI scope mount for it, but only once I find out if its a good shooter. Unfortunately being new to shooting, I'm having a bit of difficulty hitting the target at 100yds. I was shooting it at a 25yd sight in target I found on the interweb for the SMLE. All I've learned from that is I hit the 300yd line when set to 200 yds (about an inch and a half above the point of aim). I have been using the center of mass sight picture though, perhaps I should be using a 6 o'clock hold?

Anyways, back to topic. I have also considered getting the recoil pad to extend the butt length. I did not realize that a synthetic stock would have more felt recoil, not a big issue. I was hoping a better fitting stock would decrease the felt recoil (and prevent my thumb from jamming into my nose haha!). I find myself pushing my shoulder forward to compensate for the short butt, and doing so I imagine i'm increasing the felt recoil.

I am a newbie to shooting so if it sounds to any of you like I'm perhaps doing anything wrong please chime in!

Those lengths are for the FN-C1 not Lee Enfield.

No4 long branch stocks take about 7 minutes to fit to a smle. Not an hour.
