Lee Enfield No.4 T Sniper Rifle

Good day,

question about #4t buttstocks. I had read and do not recall were, that the buttstocks were all small's unless in a extreme case? Apparently afforded better sighting, especially eye to scope. Is this a myth or true?

The specification for a rifle sent to H&H was that it had a normal buttstock. Any other stock was a cause for rejection.
In service, the rifle would be fitted with whatever buttstock suited the sniper. Easier to change that than to make the sniper change his shooting habits.

Also, the sniper was allowed to modify the butt stock and the cheek piece to his own specifications.

I agree fully with Stencollector and wheaty. The short butt story is a total myth.

I have seen No.4T rifles with the comb installed for a lefthanded shooter too.

The Holland and Holland workflow included writing the number of the rifle in pencil on the top of the butt inside the butt socket. As well as the scope number stamped at the top of the wrist.

The rifle serial number on Holland and Holland sniper conversions was stamped, not pencilled, into the upper surface of the butt, on the ledge which is is hidden when the butt is fitted into the body socket. I have owned quite a few No. 4 (T) rifles and have studied hundreds of others in person or via photos and none had a rifle SN pencilled there.

I don't think a No4T with a long butt would fit in the wooden issued chest.
