Hello all,

I own a matching No.5 Mk.I (the magazine appears to be matching as well) and I find that, unlike all my other Enfields, the magazine is really stuck into the rifle. Usually if I want to pull the magazine, I have to clamp the release down, it is that tight. How can I fix this so that the mag release is much smoother? I seem to remember my No.1 Mk.III magazine released very easily.

Any advice welcome

Mine is the same way. Mine was unissued and looks relatively unfired though. I have handled and shot No.4's and the mag-release is like butter compared to my No.5

Hmm. Mine has seen alot of action, the stock is a bit smacked around. There was some nasty stuff in/on the rubber butt-cushion and the wood around the base looked weird, I had a friend who was a veteran of Vietnam and he said it looked like caked blood enzyme. Made in Nov. 44. Rifling is 90% at least and is mirror shiny, so whoever had it took good care of it. Shoots like a dream. The magazine release is just really tight and won't budge. Is there any sort of minor mod I can do to loosen it u? I've removed the mag and brushed the contact points with a toothbrush but nothing worked.

Mmm. Obviously, but I was thinking in the event of a Zombie invasion, using my other 2 No.4 magazines to swap might be easier than spilling two stripper clips at a time, and more satisfying to smack the mag home. But, cest la vie

Actually, you're supposed to load 10, then charge every 5. It's way easier to carry clips than mags, and with a little practice it's almost as fast as a (proper) M16 mag change from trigger pull to trigger pull.

Ah, thank you for the information Enefgee. Personally I would far rely upon a bolt action rather than a full or semi auto. Ammo is not cheap nor extremely availiable. :)

You might want to check the mag. release lever. I've had one that was sticking the mag in tight. Upon closer examination the lever was partly broken/worn through, so you really had to crank it to get the lever back far enough for the mag. to come out.
I think the mag. release lever was 5 or 6 bucks from Marstar.
Just a thought.

You might want to remove the forestock and refit the metal with the tubular spacer on the front guard screw and both guard screws done up tight. The spacer is supposed to prevent over--tightening of front ("king") screw, compressing the wood. If someone removed it in the past the trigger guard might be pulled up too far at the front causing it to bind a bit on the mag. Try fitting and removing the mag with the stock off. You'll have a better view of what is happening.

With the wood off you'll also be able to see if the spring is still in the proper notch on the mag catch. If the spacer is missing you can make one out of some small steel pipe or tubing.

Some of the springs were a bit stronger than others sometimes too. Smoothing the inside edges of the guard where the mag slides past them can help, as can slightly spreading those pieces if they binding on the mag.

You could also bend the mag release catch down a bit so that it projects 'south' farther, so it doesn't have to be pushed up as close to the top of the guard to release the mag.

No "wandering zero" here either eh?

Cut the bottom of the magazine off and just use it as a feed ramp then strap the ammo can on your hip, all you have to worry about then is over heating.(Night of the living dead zombie trick #43)

+ 1 on pulling the forestock.

Hello RRco, I have already done that in the past and the tubular spacer is there, but it seems to me I should strip it down and check out the mag, I think the release is just a really tight spring or was bent to keep the magazine there? bidedp51... excellent zombie machine. Goodluck, but I would recommend a Pattern 1907 to deal with nearby freakbags. :)
