I recently picked up a sported Lee Enfield, and need to clear up a few registration inaccuracies. Its a No4 Mk1 (no star), and has a serial no stamped on the wrist - U 8494. For the later made No4 Mk1*'s, it is possible to identify the manufacturer from the S/N.
Is this the case for the earlier rifles? Can this possibly be the original S/N?
If so , can it be traceable to a specific manufacturer?
Thanks in Advance...

I concur with SKScanuck, only BSA Shirley used 4 digit serial numbers on early production No4’s. Numbers ran from 0001 – 9999 and then with a prefix of A thru to Z.

If the serial number is original to the rifle, it’s a BSA.
