Last weekend I took my old No 1 sporter for a stroll in the bush, and a couple of times it seemed like my safety was creeping off. Today I played around with it a bit, and sure enough, if I push on the cocking piece the safety will snap forward, from the "safe" position to the "fire" position. Just wondering if anyone has encountered this problem before and could tell me how to fix it.

my dad's old no1 shtle was like that when i started hunting with it 20 years ago. I put up with it for a while because he wanted it "the same" as when i started using it..... anyways, after a few years I got tired of it not functioning properly and bought new surplus parts and replaced the safety components. Has worked perfectly ever since. Ellwood epps has a good selection of no1 parts and are a dealer here.

So, what parts do I need? The spring is tight, that was the first thing I checked.

i replaced the entire safety mechanism and it's parts.
I think it was a combination of wear overall to the bolt engagement surfaces and the collar inside but replacing it all with new old parts made it work perfect.
The parts are cheap and readily availlable.
takes a bit of figuring to get the timing between the collar and the safety lever correct but it is a pretty simple job to swap the parts out.

The safety may have been assembled incorrectly as well. They have something like a 4 start thread that moves the safety block in and out. If it’s timed incorrectly it won’t work properly.
