there is a gun for sale in the local paper advertised as a lee enfield savage 303? I phoned him to find out more , he said some of the stampings on it were parker hale, savage , us property, #7801301-b
What the heck is it??

US Property refers to a rifle made by Savage under Lend-Lease for Great Britain. The Parker Hale mark suggests that the rifle was sported by that firm. The PH sporters can be decent hunting rifles.

To add to Tiriaq's explanation:

One of the inspection marks on a Savage is a capital "B" on the butt socket near the serial #.

Though there is really a ----- capital "C" where the "0" is in the serial you described.

Edited: Duh! not a squared capital "S", it's a "C"

should be a C -- 78C1301 should be the serial number and there should be a square with an S in it or just an S on most of the parts, as well as teh US ordinance flaming bomb stamp

However I have one that was partially scrubbed, all US marks were removed, however they missed one of the US Ordinance flaming bombs on the rear of the reciever.

The serial number was changed by stamping a 6 over the C, its an odd collection of bits
