Hello all, I just bought a 1940 Lee Enfield Mk III* today and would like to know how the sight works. Mine is similar to the one in this picture with the same numbers and everything. The only thing this sight is missing that mine has is the little wheel to adjust it. How does this thing work? What do the numbers mean and how should I have the sight positioned? Up or down? Any info would be great, thanks! Here's the link to the pic of that sight.

Ok will ask some of the lads back home. The Irish army reserve used the Lee Enfield MKIV until 1990 so there are still a good few around who know the workings of it. Will see what I can dig up.

That's a regular No. 1 sight base without the actual rear sight or elevation adjustment . This part isn't a wheel. There's a button that is pushed in to move the elevation adjuster along the base to adjust for elevation only. As mentioned, the numbers on the base are in 100's of yards.
Windage on No.1's was/is adjusted with the front sight by moving it in the opposite direction you want the group to go. When you find one, put it on and leave it at the bottom. It'll likely be easier to buy the whole rear sight assembly than finding the elevation adjuster. $19 at Marstar. The rear sight base comes off by removing the screws and lifting it out.
Go here for a good assembly/disassembly page with pictures. The guy doesn't take off the rear sight, but you can see what it should look like in pictures 84 to 86. http://www.surplusrifle.com/smle/rifledisassembly/index.asp
It's easier to see the rear sight assembly in this drawing. Also from Steve's pages. http://stevespages.com/ipb-leeenfield-no1.html

Ok did some digging and it turns out that the version that was last in service was the Lee Enfield No4 Mk 2.

The following is a quote from Irish Military Online an Irish military themed discussion board. Its by Goldie Fish.

The Lee Enfield No4 Mk 2 differed from the earlier SMLE in the location of the leaf type rear aperature sight, above the bolt. When not in use it folded flat but you had a simple battle sight, a large aperature which would give you a rough aim to get your first shot off.

Raise the sight(which was similar to the sights found on the bren, except the aperature was in the centre) and set your range. While there was no 100yard range mark, it was generally accepted that if you turned the adjusting wheel on the sight, each click was 50m, thus, two clicks below the 200 mark and you were set to 100. However the trajectory of the round was pretty flat at that range and there was little difference between 100 and 200. In practice we always set sights to 200 when firing from the 100. The Zeroing white square was placed at the top of the centre of the target rather than the absolute centre.. The Blade type foresight was protected from damage by very distinctive foresight guards.

ok, so to change the topic to the No.4/No.5 mk1. sight. when you flip the site down. how many yards is the battle site set up for? also on my No.4 its a MkII sight. and the battle sight hole is alot smaller.? is this different in range?......how does this site work?

The battle sight on the No.4/NO.5 was set up at 300 yards if I remember. Is yours an adjustable one or the "flip" one? the flip one is set up for 300 and 600 yards.

Just to chime in with a quick question that I've been wondering...

I have a No4 with the battle sights which flip to the adjustable one...I can't recall the type of sight, MK-something ? When you're looking through the rear aperture at the front post...should the top of the middle post be in the dead center of the aperture ?

This is what I assumed, however I'm having issues with elevation when shooting...my left to right is good though.

That sight you have there Cory just looks like it's missing the sliding piece which increases the angle of the sight like a ramp for increasing range. Same as on the Mauser and Mosin.

Hello!
Do you already have the missing parts for your sight? If you need the slider, I can send you one, I have got some from a friend's parts bin.
PM me.
PP. :)
