I made a nice shooter out of a DCRA rifle that had cut down wood. Looks a bit like a #5, and shoots very well. I happened to have a 308 magazine and extractor, so it cycles well.
It is my son's rifle. I am so impressed with it, I think I will build one for myself, using Boyd's sporter laminated wood.
I found a DCRA rifle with an aftermarket medium heavy barrel on it. Should make a good rifle when cut down to about 19". I am inclined to re-chamber it with a 303 reamer, so the original magazine will feed smoothly. I have another 308Brit, and it works well.
The other day I was shooting one of my 303 sporters, a commercial conversion done in England on a #1 action. The #1 makes a nice round smooth receiver rifle, whereas the #4 is rather angular and clunky in comparison.
I am thinking of building the new sporter using a cut down #1 $75 sporter I have laying around. All I would use is the receiver, which will get polished and blued. Is there any good reason not to use a #1 action?
