Lee Enfield Sporter to Military Spec….

Hi,
I am looking to transform this Lee Enfield back to original - if possible and at a reasonable cost.
Have to define what reasonable is - I guess.
Is there anyone out there capable of doing this?
Thanks,

I bought all the wood and metal for one. Cost me more then buying a complete non matching rifle.(before i knew of CGN). Only reason i did it was because the rifle has personal value to me. But i wouldn't do it otherwise

many of us have been doing this for years. doing a no4 mk1 is easy and usually you can get away with it for about $300. doing up a No1 right right now is expensive. if you want to do it 100% correct your looking at up to even $600. the wood alone can go for $400.
if your lucky you can find an indian gun in good full military shape and get it for like $400 and just put the wood on your gun.

Lots of fun as a hobby but not economical otherwise. #4s aren't bad but #1s run pretty pricey for parts as mentioned above. I paid $200 recently for just the repo wood. I got the fittings altogether for $100. So $300 was as good as one can get. Usually way more.

I did one like yours and it cost me $500. I just sold it for less.

It's still worth doing. You'll enjoy learning about the SMLE, and you'll learn new skills. It's more than worth the money, imo.

As others have said, it's very expensive at the moment with our dollar being worthless. Wait awhile and it'll be a lot cheaper. I have four barrelled actions waiting to be restored (2x1914s, 1x1915 and a 1916) all in decent condition and I can't afford to restore them even though that is my hobby. I was recently offered $400 for a full set of wood that I have and I said no, mind you this is an exceptional set.
Even a junker set of wood is overpriced at the moment.

I always recommend checking out Liberty Tree collectors out of the US. They probably have all the wood/metal you will need.
I've ordered from them a couple times without issues...mind you this was when our dollar was closer to par ;)

It seems quite involved and it doesn't help that our dollar is so low.
Thanks.

As the others have told you, it certainly is possible. I would not, however, consider it a reasonable cost.

I was going to restore a sportered 1913 Mk III SMLE but after pricing out the furniture and hardware -- and mind you, this was before the Canadian dollar went south vs. the U.S. dollar -- I put it on hold. Last week I traded her and some money for a non-sported 1941 Lithgow Mk III SMLE.

IMHO, do it because you want to learn more about the rifle or it has some personal connection to you, no other reason. Unless you find a deal, the cost of the sportered rifle, furniture and hardware is usually more than a cost of just waiting and then buying a non-sportered.

Yes, my first rifle.

Your rifle is a good candidate. You have the primary metal. Just need a stock set, band, nose, ears, swivels, dozen screws, buttplate. $600 max for new condition parts, some of your time and it will look like it came out of the showroom a century ago. Or 300-400 range for all the parts, used in varying condition pitted to good, to look like a battle hardened vet.
