If I'm using a hand tool to prime my cases how would that effect me using the lee turret press? or is the whole point of the turret press so you don't have to load in batches? is it faster if I get the press priming tool/accessory?

I have a lee turret press. I do not use the primer function on it. I like to hand press seperatly. I load only 223 on it, right now.

But I would use it when I do small batched of 44 mag, just to save time. And it does save time.

You'll save time by going with prime on press. Otherwise you'd first have to run them through the sizer/decap die first and use the hand tool as a seperate step. Then when you go to run them through the turret press there will only be powder drop and then seat/crimp.

I don't know if I explained that right, but it is quicker to prime on press.

I only use the turret for pistol ammo.

I have been loading on a turret press now for a year and never had any issues using the built in priming function. It saves tons of time, and I can't understand why people dont like using it. I have never had a primer go off on me yet and have used winchester, cci, and recently sellior and bellot. No issues with any of them. If you get the safety prime it makes things even faster so u dont have to pick up the primer and place it in the cup manually. All in all I am very happy with this setup and can put out about 200 rounds in an hour with pistol rounds including a taper crimp.

it has a a built in priming tool?? do you have to feed one primer at a time?

ps I'm not new to reloading; been using Challanger press for years now, just want to upgrade and not sure hpw the turret press works

The thing that pushes in the primer comes with the press, but you have to order the primer feeding doodads separately, and there's one for pistol and one for rifle. I find the turret is great for straight wall cases, but not so much for bottlenecks. I tend to use it more like a single stage when I'm doing bottleneck cases.

I actually felt the swinging primer arm on the turret press slowed me down. I used to just prime my cases in front of the tv...it didn't feel so much like loading then.,

I agree with Mlehtovara. The turret press works great. I have Lee safety primer feed. No feeding problems with it or anything. You will need a extension on your charge die if you are using the pro auto-disk powder measure. The turret press is quicker than a single stag and cheaper and easier if you want to load different cartridges. I use mine mostly for pistol cartridges. For rifle cartridges 223 308. Deprimeand resize with a single stage. Sometimes prime with a hand primer or the one on the turret press and use the turret press to charge the case, seat the bullet and put a factory crimp. You wont go wrong with a safety primer feed. AGE

I like to "prep" cases seperately. I tumble, wipe down, then deprime with Lee table-top pin and base, then clean (and de-bur if new cases) primer pocket, then hand prime, all in front of the T.V. I put empty cases in factory 50 round trays until ready to load on turret press. Just take de-primer rod out of first die and load normally.
