Left Handed .22?

Hey guys..

Well, I'm one of those cursed with the old Right handed left eye dominant problem.. I'd like to try left handed shooting but don't want to throw a ton of cash into it to find out it isn't right for me. (I've been a milsurp shooter all my life besides my .22's so its always been right handed for me.) And now that I'm thinking of sinking some more serious cash on a longer range rifle i'd like to be confident that I'm making a good choice and not screwing myself.

So I'm looking for some help.. Who makes a good lefty bolt action .22? Nothing too expensive though as money is short.

Also, a little bit of a side question. Whats a good .22 scope for 50m - 100m? Optics aren't my area..

Thanks in advance :)

One of my .22LR rifles is a Savage MKII lefty with a Leapers 3-9x32mm scope mounted on it. Very inexpensive, and the quality is pretty good. Shoots well too...but my 10/22RR always outshoots it for some reason. The Accutrigger is one of the nicest in the industry, regardless of caliber or brand.

Are the lefty Savages available in the heavy target barrel?

The Savage looks to be in my Price range.. So Ill have to go down to the local shop and ask about it.
Though the fact it doesn't out shoot your 10/22 kinda worries me. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking the 10/22 as Ive never fired one I just hear they aren't the most accurate rifles out there.. So having a bolt action that isn't as accurate kinda scares me! haha.

Well thanks for the replies.. Any other suggestions are welcome.

I think the only lefty rimfire Savage rifle that comes with a heavy barrel is the .17HMR model (righty model shown):

My Ruger 10/22 is the ruger rifle model with the free floated 20" barrel and fiber optic sights, and it's very accurate. I have the same Leapers 3-9x32mm scope on it.

why dont you shoot a right handed .22 for a while, to try it, i am a lefty and really like my antchutz 1416 lefty sporter, the cz looks good that would be the one i would try was i looking for a .22,you may find a old browning t bolt, they are good as well, i think you might have to try out the savage.22 to see if you like it, not my first choice but i havent shot one, thats my two cents worth ,, wade

Ive shot right handed rifles my whole life and own 3 right handed .22's but being left eye dominant has always been a problem. I wanted to try out a lefty rifle and get a feel for it.. To see if its better for me or not as I'm looking into to building a long range rig and would rather put the money into something that feels right (or left).

Hence why I'm looking for an inexpensive .22 so I can get a feel for it.

Allstone: Hmm, thanks. I dont have any .17HMR rifles.. I hear its a good little cal but expensive. Im looking into doing A LOT of shooting so its probably not for me. Too bad though, now I see why lefties complain about not having enough choices.. I feel for you guys! at least I have a choice..

This picture is one of the first targets I put up at 50 yards the first time I ever shot my Ruger 10/22RR at the range. This was using the factory fiber optic open sites BEFORE I installed my scope. I'd say it shoots quite well out of the box. :)

At 100 yards the big fiber optic sights are too fat to make any type of precision shooting feasible. That's why I installed the scope.

Current plinker setup, cost me less then $600, and remember, I needed the scope asap so I paid out of my ass to get it locally. Otherwise, got the gun and scope from P&D (mags sourced through Ebay).

Savage 93GL (.22wmr, a .22LR model is also available) - $400
Scope mount - $60
Scope - Bushnell 3-8x32 rimfire-type - $89
Spare mag x2 - $40

I purchased the 93GL as the .22LR model was gone, and back-ordered for six months, where-as the 93GL was in-stock, on sale, and ready to ship - and a caliber that permitted to go after hares as well (I wouldnt try it with a .22, unless it was some of that hyper-velocity stuff).

Only quirk is that it tends to "nestle" whatever brand of ammo, and varies from gun-to-gun. Mine hates CCI, no matter what kind or price (FTC, FTF and FTE's), but eats up the cheapest Winchester Magnum from Walmart like it was a starving pig. All while having similar, and occasionally, better accuracy then the CCI's (minus the CCI competition in terms of accuracy and repeatability, but that tight-tolerance stuff is a nightmare in this gun). Oddly enough, the three other local Savage .22 owners chant stories of hatred for the "dreaded" two-dollar box of Walmart .22 in their Savages (mind you, I'm the only one with a .22 mag).

Also watch out for mag lips that don't hold down the ammo enough. nothing a small set of hand tools and a vice can't fix however! :D

Hmm, Ill try to keep that in mind.

Im going to search around the local shops see if there are any used lefties around first. Are there any older models I should watch out for? Or ones I should look for?

K, well I went to the local shop.. they didn't have any used LH rimfires but they had a Savage GL and it felt pretty good to hold (though, the stock felt kinda plastic. I'm not use to new rifles I guess though so thats my own problem). It comes out to $270 or so. Not too expensive so when I get some money I think ill get it.

Are there any other available stocks for that rifle or am I stuck with the factory one?

Thanks for the help guys!

Decent deal. And I made a mistake on the price. $460 total, just found my old calc sheet for it all.

It's a laminate stock, and I looked and looked, and I have yet to ever find a synthetic-stock'ed .22 in left hand. All wood or laminate. There *is* one company that apparently had some fiberglass left-handed aftermarket stocks "in the works", but I've never heard back from them and can't find their website anymore.

You'll only get a synthetic stock in a leftie rifle when you hit .22-250 centerfire calibers (and higher). Tika and Ruger would be the companies for those, Savage has one model with synthetic in centerfire/left-hand as well.

Lefties tend to use pumps, levers, semis, etc since it is a beeatch to get a leftie bolt sometimes. My 30-06 is a Ruger leftie but my 22 is a semi and a
Marlin lever. My 308 is a Savage 99c and my shotgun is a pump. Pretty much standard fare for most lefties. The safeties are still right hand but you get used to them. Many options to shoot leftie that do not require a bolt. Good luck.
