Like the title says I'm wondering who was the first manufacturer to start making them and who followed suit. did Winchester M70 ever come in a lefty? I know Remington 700 eventually did but I am curious as to what other manufactures put out

Prior to WWII, the Mauser Werke would build you a left hand mirror version of the Mauser 98... for an extra $200. Keep in mind that a complete rifle was only worth around $125 depending on the model at that time. I think there may have been one actually made that way.

I believe before the 60's you were limited to customs. My dad, who is a lefty, never fired one until the 80's. As a kid I remember him firing right hand bolt guns as fast as any right handed person. He kept it at the shoulder and reached over the scope. When he got a left handed rifle he had to break old habits

Thanks for the input. I just recently bought a left handed rifle after 25yrs of hunting and although I have not fired it yet it definitely feels good to cycle it the way it is suppose to be worked. I like older all steel rifles that is why I was wondering about who manufactured lefties back in the day

I believe the Savage 110 was the first readily available LH rifle. When I was younger a neighbor had one right around 1960.

If you discount bolt action rifles there were probably lots of single shot and double barrel rifles that were 'ambidextrous'

Savage seems to be the first but who followed suit. Remington had lefties in the 70s I know but I'm not sure when they started making them. Winchester made the m70 in a left but agian I'm not sure as to when they started manufacturing them in left

Weatherby
Savage 10/11/110/11/16/116
Remington 700
Remington 788
Ruger 77 mk II
Winchester 70
Zastava M70

I've had all those at one time or another, all left handed.

Who manufactured left handed rifles in the 50,60,70's
The Savage 110 was available as a left-handed rifle in the 60's. I believe Weatherby was next, followed by Remington in 1974-75. As always, I am going from my own memory so all info is open to question.

The Remington 788. Thier no frills deer rifle came chambered in 6mm Remington and 308 Win. LH bolt RH port. And the Remington 700 Varmint true LH. I'm pretty sure in 243 and 308.
Wichita made thier very nice and expensive varmint and target rifles with true LH bolt, LH port. Same ballpark cashwise, the Weatherby made the Mark V series in true LH.

And the fine Browning A bolt already mentioned here. Although I'm thinking it's just under the wire, first made in 1979??
