Left Handed shooter....how compatible is the M14?

I've never shot one, but I have shot a Garand with no problems. The brass never touches you.

It is the old model AR-15 without the shell deflector that I loathe to shoot.

I hate having a hot shell casing shoot straight back and land between my neck and coat collar. It sure gets your attention in a hurry!

I shoot right handed, but i do practice shooting my Norc M14 from my left once in a while... the brass usually gets thrown about 30 degrees to the right and front.. never in my face.. although i think my brass is deflected by my scope mount.. not sure if it would do the same with out the mount.

thanks, everyone. I am glad to hear this.
Perhaps I should make topic specificaly for lefthand shooting. which guns ok or not ok.

what do you think?

Great idea I'd love to find more guns, that say, had a reversible safety.
I didn't know you could do it with benelli's till a week ago.
I wish you could do it with 870s. The most popular shotgun, isn't even adaptable to lefties.

Oh yeah, and the M14 is a perfect example of a gun that is well designed to be ambidextrous.
They should use that safety system on more guns.

I am left handed with a long gun (Left eye is my master eye) I have owned and used a M1A NM rifle for over 30 years, she is still a great favourite especially as she is ideal for a left handed shooter. The safety and mag release are ambidextrous and the charging handle on the left is ideal for us. Never a problem with empty brass hitting me. An M1A (M14) talks to you, you have to tune your brain to listen and trust yourself to act, she sounds different (even with ear defenders) and feels different when you have a malfunction or fire the last rd in a mag, this was in the UK in the old days with 20 rd mags. I never could count to 20 under stress! I expect one failure to feed, or stove pipe etc per 1,000 rds and been left handed always allowed me to glance in the action with out moving the rifle from my shoulder to confirm what, if any, action was required, this was a real advantage with the fast snap shooting on timed exposures that we often used to shoot.

Push button safeties: I have mixed feelings about reversing them, if you do, you may handicap yourself if you pick up a standard gun and a stranger could be unsafe with yours. I have learnt to live with firearms designed for right handed shooters and surprisingly have very little difficulty.

Those of us who are naturally right handed but left eye dominate, we often have a distinct advantage while carrying out some drills and reloading as we have our most dextrous hand (right) for performing the reload. I have found this to be very true with single shot and double rifles.

No battle rifle or copy of one is a problem for left handed shooters. Ejection is decidedly, um, robust. Empties go nowhere near one's face.

I, out of coincidence, read my M14 manual last night, and it said that the rifle was designed for right handed shooters, and that if you are left handed you should practice shooting from the right side... seems like a simple solution... hehe...

Interesting.. I am right handed but I have to shoot left as well, as I can't close my left eye and keep the right one open.. Good to see I'm not the only one LOL
