Hey all i was just wondering if anybody knows of a lefty bolt gun i could get in either 35 Whelen or even 3006 so i can get it converted to 35. Id prefer wood stock and fixed mag, but really just looking at what's out there right now before i start getting a custom rig built. Also forgot to mention a double set trigger (i think that's what they are called) would be a plus.

Just did a quick search on it and it seams to be a very nice cartridge. Do you know if it will be good for whitetail as well or is it overkill?

With the right bullet weight it works well for Whitetail, Mulie, anything like that.
The Whelen is an excellent cartridge to work with even moreso if you are a handloader.

I'm also getting my savage 99 rebored for 358 winchester, do you think the whelen would be redundant? I have heard good things about the 9.3x62 being a great heavy rifle cartridge with manageable recoil.

The 358 Win. is a fine cartridge and who knows, for your needs it be as good or maybe better than the Whelen.
My 358 works really well with a 200 or 225 gr. load, the Whelen I have prefers 250 to 300 gr. load.
My 9.3 seems to shoot very well with any bullet weight from 232 to 320 gr., but unfortunately it has become redundant and will soon ' go on the block '.
You will appreciate a Whelen if you plan on hunting game larger than Deer,

If you are set on a Whelen in left hand I would just start looking for a long action donor. That is what I did years back when looking for a medium bore lefty. Precious few around, and I lost patience and rebarreled a M700LH in 270 Win. If you aren't set on a Whelen but want similar ballistic characteristics I would look at a 9.3X62 Zastava from Tradex. $750 brand spanking new and your done.

The 35 whelen is really versatile, use a 225gr AB or a 250gr Partition for the big stuff, a 200gr RN or FTX for deer, and a 158gr pistol bullet for fun/plinking. It really is a do-all cartridge.

If you don't load for it the factory Nosler 225 AB and Remington 200gr CL have got you covered.

A lefty bolt will most likely be a custom or a build. There's always the 7600 pump

Good post Sir, nowadays I think the old Whelen is often overlooked for something lighter or faster.
As well as the above mentioned loads mine shoots a cast bullet very well, an old and I believe discontinued Lyman mould that cast a blunt 290 gr. GC bullet that is a real thumper, an excellent Mulie boolit.

Just curious as to what the heaviest bullet i can put into a whelen can be. I am gunna have a 358 for all my general hunting needs and so i want either the 35 Whelen or 9.3x62 for my "big gun". If i can get similar grains and ballistics from a whelen ( albeit slightly slower I've heard) then whelen will be fine. I'm just thinking of somthing i could take all over the globe should i get the funds for say Africa hunts or the like. Thank you so much for your input guys it is really helping alot.

310gr?
For a heavier bullet you'll need a faster twist, I had a Marlin in 35 Whelen with a 1:12 twist specifically to use the Woodleigh 310gr bullets. If you plan on shooting 250gr + bullets then have at least a 1:14 twist barrel. The 1:16 twist factory Remington barrels seem to be fine with the 158-250gr bullets.

The downside of the Whelen with the heavier stuff is your limit on velocity. Inside 250yds its a thumper.

Again, The Nosler 225gr AB factory rounds are excellent, 3600+ ft/lbs at the muzzle and still 2000+ fps / 2000+ ft/lbs @ 350yds with 15" of drop, it's all I can envision myself needing for my hunting purposes.

I have two Whelen lefties. A Rem 700 CDL with a factory Whelen barrel from a rh 700 installed as well as a custom SS LH 700 that David Henry built for me last year.

Love them both, fave big game cartridge bar none (my LH new king is close behind though...:dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana:)

If you might take it all over the world 9.3 will be easier to find ammo for and might be legal for dangerous game (depending on the country).
IMO the best thing about the Whelan is pistol bullets for Gophers and 225gr + for the big critters.

It's a stock blue and wood Remington 700 BDL in 35 Whelen.
Apparently Remington made 700 of them in 2005 with 24" barrels.

I paid $800.00 for it at the local gun show here in Cranbrook, RCBS dies included.

I've got a BLR in 358 as well, I love 35 caliber.

I have one of those, picked up in excellent condition used at Shooter's Den in Sudbury. Left hand will be a challenge.
