Like a lot of lefties, I've had to get used to shooting right-handed guns. But, now that I am in the market for a precision bolt action rifle, I was hoping to hear what other lefties had to say about their rifle purchases.

I am really leaning towards buying a Tikka T3-tactical, but I am hesitating due to the right handed configuration. Any other lefties shooting this gun wth positive results?

Thanks

Well as a lefty myself, I just purchesed a Savage 10LFP.Nice rifle although the stock is not the greatest. Other than that the gun itself is excellent. Great price and well worth a look.

My general rule is if I am going to fire off bipod mostly, then right hand is OK. If you expect to shoot off hand a great deal, then semi auto or left handed. Works for me....

Speaking of custom lefties, John Spartan I will be testfiring yours Thursday and it should be done Friday. SO don't be target practising at night for reindeer, the fat guy might just miss your chimney

Merry Christmas all ye Gentlemen!!

Uncle Walther if I may share my experiences.

About 2 years ago or so I had Rick over at Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply build me my First fully custom long range/tactical Left Handed rifle.

The first thing we did was to determine exactly how left-handed I am. You see I am right handed, but left eye dominant. To determine this Rick took me to the store, and had me cycle and handle, almost identical Rem 700 bolt action rifle. The only difference was that one was Left handed, the other right handed. After some dexterity, and action cycling tests we were able to determine the I am truly a left handed shooter.

The next step was to find a platform for as a basis for a custom. I really wanted a mauser style rife and as such we needed a left handed older Sako. I settled down for a long wait as Rick searched the country for a left handed Sako. Would you not know that 2 weeks later he had what I needed, a complete left handed Sako 691L rifle. Rick trued the action, rebarreled it with a heavy 7mm rem mag barrel, bedded it , re-worked the factory trigger and worked his magic on so many other aspects of the rifle, to give me truly what I wanted an needed to get into long range shooting and hunting. The rest, as they say is history.

I am truly glad that I went the path I did, as I am extremely happy with the end results, a rifle that fits me. As left-handed individuals, we often end up settling, or making do in a right handed world. I truly believe that if you are going to shell out significant dollars, the product should fit you not the other way around. Be patient. Know what you want, earnestly look for it. As in the end it will be worthwhile, and you will have something worth keeping.

Regards and all the best

R

Thanks for the advice guys. I decided to get a semi-auto HK SL8 instead. I am not sure I would call it a "precision" rifle, but I'll give it a try anyway.

My brother is a lefty. For a while he was considering getting a righty rifle because of the greater selection available. He wanted to get a Savage but was not impressed with the standard plastic stock.

He ended up getting a Savage 12 Series Varmint Left hand. http://www.savagearms.com/12Varminterleft.htm
The laminated stock and floated stainless fluted barrel are very nice. It shoots MOA with Winchester white box .223 and he is beginning to experiment with target ammo. He's pretty happy with it.
