I've just come in to a some money, part of a bequest from my late Grandparents. I'd like to do something in memory of my Granddad, who lived a large portion of his life in Kenya, and did some hunting there. My dad said he had some fine guns, including Belgian shotguns. My Grandad had to give them up when they moved from Kenya to India in the 50's after the Mau Mau uprising. My dad is not much of a gun guy, and doesn't really remember what guns his dad had. I was thinking of getting a Ruger RSI in 7x57, as this cartidge has a long history in Africa, and the Ruger No 1 is a very classic looking rifle. I was also thinking of getting my Grandfathers, my father, and my intials engraved on the side of the receiver. This rifle will go on to my kids some day. I'd like to know peoples thought on this, and alsowhere to get one engraved.

A No.1 in 7x57 or .300H&H would be a fine choice. I would skip the engraving, but have a custom case made for it, with initials.

7x57 is a great choice man. Other than that, i would look into the .300 Holland & Holland or the .375 Holland & Holland. If you're planning on passing it down to your kids i would go for the 7x57 though as it will be easier for them to shoot from the time that they are 12 to when they are 80 and you're long dead.

As for the choice of rifle, either one that you mentioned would be a great choice. If you got a whole big bunch of money and are willing to part with A LOT of it, why not look into the Mauser M98s? I think they go for about 8k$. There is no other rifle in the world that is identified with africa as much as a Mauser. The price is a lot to swallow but if you're really really really interested in passing on a great rifle that will be worth a lot of money one day and you want something that is truly an all around good rifle for Africa then the Mauser is the way to go. Good Luck.
