I'm new to the site so bear with me if I ask something that has already been asked before. I read on one of the government websites that M14s are prohibited as of 2000 or some year in the past based on an order in council. I see that people are still buying Norincos and other M14 clones. I'm a bit confused then, are M14s prohibited, restricted or non-restricted and if so, how do you tell what is restricted/prohibited and what isn't if you should come across one for sale? I understand a lot of mil surplus M14s made it into Canada prior to 2000 so there are probably a lot floating around, one of which I'd love to get into my hands :agree:

The original M14, as manufactured for the US military, is prohibited because it was manufactured as a full auto firearm. Any version of the rifle manufactured as semi-auto only is not prohibited.

Semi-auto versions would be restricted if they have a barrel under 18.5", non-restricted otherwise.

The only way to know this stuff is to know the law, or where to find it. Never believe the advice and statements you hear from information brochures, gun store denizens or cops.

Especially cops.

The Orignal FA( full auto) has bein prohibed since 1978, you had to have it converted to semi auto only, then the oder in council was passed that prohibed all converted auto in1995. The ones you see now are made semi only right from the start and never where full auto. Its all in the reciever.

actually , the m14 as it left the factory was NOT a select FIRE or full auto rifle- there was a KIT attached to the triggerguard that was detached at the brigade level that ALLOWED it to fire in full auto mode- it was up to unit commanders to determine how many full auto rifles were to be in the unit-
the rest of the kits were returned to depot
when the m14 was replaced by the m16 , the rifles were returned to war stock and then seconded to isreal for their army
when the isreali army decleared these guns surplus, a bunch of these guns were imported into canada
AS PART OF THE IMPORT REQUIREMENT, THE SELECTOR WAS ALTERED, A BIT WAS GROUND OFF , AND THE SELECTOR ITSELF WAS WELDED SHUT SO THE FULL AUTO CAPABILITY WAS REMOVED , EVEN IF YOU DID HAVE ACCESS TO A KIT
THESE ARE SEMI-AUTO RIFLES ONLY
however, the LIBERAL government CHANGED THE RULES overnight via ORDERS IN COUNCIL and declared all US MADE M14 rifles PROHIBITED
supposedly on the fact they could be made full auto
the way to recognise these is that they are marked "US RIFLE M14" on the heel of the receiver , and they are from one of FOUR manufacturers
WINCHESTER, HARRINGTON RICHRDSON, TRW, AND SPRINGFIELD ARMORY
further confusion exists as there are 2 ENTITYS EXISTING AS SPRINGFIELD ARMORY- the commercial enterprise and the now defunct government armory
all others are non-restricted rifles
however , there also exists that the ISREALI m14 RIFLEs were sold as NON-RESTRICTED and information collected concerning them was VOLUNTARY - the deal was that you were supposed to go to the police with yours, where they turned it into a restricted by collecting the vitals - which then turned it into a range only rifle- same deal as the ar15- then POOF it turned into a prohibited via orders in council overnite
that is the deal with the m14
ie right now the real deal while it is a SEMI-AUTO ONLY and INCAPABLE OF FULL AUTO FIRE, it is still a prohib and a safe queen

T-Star, you are 100% correct...but that information will just confuse the OP.

In short, this is a summary of the "bare bones" regarding M14 type rifles in Canada:

-Actual M14's built for the US military (or other military forces) are prohibited. Unless you own one right now, it is very unlikely that you will ever legally own on in Canada.

-A number of other rifles that are a LOT like M14's ARE legal for you to own. All of these rifles are non-restricted unless the barrel is shortened to less than 18.5 inches.

-The rifles are called M14, M14S, or M305 almost interchangeably. Some people get VERY irritated if you use the wrong name. I don't know why.

-Marstar has imported a few lots of them, mostly from China. There is also a bunch out there that are being called "Bell" M14's. I don't know much about them, but others here will. Marstar tells us that they will be importing some M14 type rifles from Europe in the not-too-distant future - details will follow in due course, I'm sure.

-There are also M1A's that are manufactured by Springfield Armory in the US. These tend to be substantially more expensive than the Chinese versions. I will not start comparing the pros and cons of Springfield vs Norinco here.

I hope that clarifies things a bit for you. Read this forum, there's lots of good stuff (and some bunk too). You'll quickly figure out who knows their stuff and who doesn't.

M14 type rifles can be a lot of fun. They can also drain you of a lot of money. Buy one if you like the idea. Pick a cheap one. Try it out...shoot it plenty. If you like it enough, change it around or tune it...or just keep it the way it is. In short, do whatever you want with it :D
