legal question carbine

Only centerfire semi-auto's need to have a 18.5 inch barrel to remain non-restricted.

Anything else can wear any length of barrel so long as it remains over 26 inches OAL.

While most other countries don't consider black powder guns to be firearms, Canada does. The kit needs to be registered before import.

If it is an old cap and ball pistol - made pre 1898 - then you could buy it and bring it back. It would not have to be registered under Cdn. law. It would be a really good idea to be able to prove to CBSA that the pistol is, in fact, an antique. A modern cap and ball pistol - post 1897 - is subject to registration, ATTs, etc. in Canada.
