leopould vs vortex

Hi, I am relatively new to guns and still learning what are good brands. I bought my hunting rifle a couple of years ago its a 30.06 savage 111 package deal with the simmons scope. I am thinking the scope is crap (or I am a horrible shot : ) and I was looking for something around the 300.00 range and I have seen both entry level leopould and vortex for that amount but which is the better scope?

Whatever one looks better to your eyes.Its hard to buy shoes for someone without having them try them on.Feet and eyes are about the same.What looks good with your eyes,will not always look the same, with a different set of eyes.Best advice I can give is to try these scopes out that you mentioned.Keeping in mind,that there is a difference between indoor and outdoor lighting.What looks good inside the store,may be different outside the store.Best if you can,try the scopes outside.good luck.
 
I would look at the Bushnell Elite's. Tons of scope for the money and easily comparable to any of the scopes that you have listed. I think Leopould make great stuff but they are way over priced (at least here in Canada).

I disagree with the bolded phrase.
It's always easy to rationalize if one does not want to pay the price.
Bushnell warranty can be a nightmare. I have seen 6 month turnarounds.
Leupold is very good, a week to 10 day turnaround at Korth Ind.
Vortex is across the counter in many cases.
I use Leupold, not to be an elitist, but because I like the overall quality, and have always been impressed with the few issues I have had with them.
There are better optics available, but at considerably more money.

Look at the Redfields... leupold warranty backed and very nice scopes at reasonable prices.... no doubt the higher end leupolds have nicer glass.... but they are double the price... redfields will outdo any similarly priced bushnell and many higher priced bushnell imop
 
IMHO, you can't beat the value on a Redfield Revolution. I don't own one, but my buddy has the 4x12x40 and it's a bright no nonsense scope. I own both Vortex and Leupold-for your price bracket, I'd go Rifleman in the Leupold or check out the Viper in the Vortex lineup. Pay attention to the reticle that best suits your needs (thick vs. thin vs. duplex vs. BDC).
 
I have both. The Vortex Diamondback in 2-7 x35 with the BDC reticle is a good choice for what you need. Less cost than Leupold, but still nice and crisp glass and rugged enough to take some abuse.
 
You betcha, a Redfield is like hitting the easy button!!;)

Get your first scope, try it, play with it, test it, use it.Then you will get a feel for what you like and your eyes will accept.Experience and time goes a long way.

In that price range you can get a used VXII 3-9. Always a good choice. If you want to save $80 buy the Vortex. I haven't owned any of the 1" Vortex line, but have an PST and think that it is fantastic.

If it was between Redfield and Vortex, I would buy Vortex.
 
I've got a pair of Vortex Vulture bino's, and have owned 2 Vortex scopes in the past and they were good for what I used them for. I also have a few Leupold VX II's and they are also good scopes but pricey. I'm not a competitive shooter just a varmint/big game hunter and think Vortex is the best thing out there in the low/mid range area. They're warranty is awesome, I like the fact that even if I damage them and its my fault..ie drop my bino's on a rock, they will fix em.

I have Vortex-Redfield-Bushnell- scopes in your price range - i like them all - pros and cons of all of them but to say a Bushnell 3200 is any better than my Vortex Diamondback or its better then my Redfield - i can not - look through all of them and pick out which one suits your eyes the best . They are all in the same price range - As some people have said Bushnells warranty can be very slow ! Redfield is done through Korth here in canada and is fast - Vortex can be over the counter ? With the Mid range scopes i find the sames things - i like them all with some likes and dislikes about all of them !
Good luck on your decision but stay away from the no branders ! Also there are some very good buys on EE - you can get a mid to high end scope for a low-mid price sometimes - might be your best alternative depending on your time using it in the field and conditions !

I have a couple of Vortex vipers and a leupold vx2. I actually prefer the vortex for these reasons: 1) The over the counter warranty 2) I can adjust the paralax to the distance im shooting without having to lift my head off the cheek weld. 3) Price 4) Adjusting the magnification is much easier 5) No tools required for Adjusting windage and elevation.
 
I would not put Leupold up so high. I bought a VXI 4-12 Leupold and brand new in the box it came with a huge problem. The elevation would not adjust. Windage changed just fine but turning the elevation did not do anything. I had to have it sent to Alberta for warranty. Warranty is good only if you dont have to use it. I now think i should have bought a different scope and at least Bushnell is in Vaughn 10 mins away from where i work.

I am sure that the higher end scopes are better but i am still waiting to get my scope back and i rather i just get my money back.
 
Leupold Warranty is FAR better than bushnell's. If the one bushnell I have goes belly up, I'm not even going to bother with warranty, I'll just junk it and get another Leupold.
2 week turnaround is pretty typical for korth...(that is mailing it to them AND getting it back fixed btw) and usually you don't have to use it with Leupold products unless you actually buggered something up... one I have got the ring wrapped over the reticle...
