So here in NS we have a rule that prohibits 223s from being used on deer, 243 is the smallest caliber you'll reasonably get away with (the rule is .23 or bigger IIRC).
So thats the basis for this poll, combined with the knowledge that in many jurisdictions there are caliber restrictions...

I find that the 243 works very well on Deer sized animals out to 300 yds.Any
farther than that I wouldnt shoot anyway. That poll would even cut out the 7M.M.No way for me anyway.

Didn't Jack O'Conner shoot everything under the sun with .270?? In BC your limited to centerfire rounds for big game with some specific limitations for Bison.

We should not put limits on ourselves. We should use common sense as to what to use, but to put restrictions is what we are fighting the anti gun people about. A 223 will take a dear but there a lot of better calibers to use. Use the right too for the job.

I guess we'll have to forget about Mr. Bell shooting all those elephants with his trusty old 7x57 too.
Within reason it's not the caliber but the bullet used and the shot placement. I guess a little speed sprinkled on top too.

I've heard of "Old frontier women" protecting their own by slaying grizzlies with a .22 rf but we've all heard those tales. :|

While I wouldn't say everyone could, they SHOULD be able to put game down effectively with a sub .308 cal.

you obviously have not seen 6.5mm & 7mm cartridges in action

Even the Bison restriction here in B.C. goes below that, allowing 7mm and energy figures that would allow one to use a 7x57 with a 175 grain projectile for those large Bovids. I see no practical value in restricting bullet diameter for the game we have here. We already see some provinces disallowing 22 Centerfires, and with some of the new .224 bullets available, these would be suitable for deer in the hands of a careful shot. Eagleye.

I saw a picture of a record Alaskin Moose,It was shot up there somewhere anyway.
It dropped with one shot from a 130 Grn.270.It was supposed to be 6'6" at the
withers.I guess that it did not know that 270's dont kill big game.
